The miners know all about the effect of natural gas in their own industry, they work in it. What's happened is the EPA, under Obama, artificially increased the costs to burn coal in power plants. The EPA, coupled with the benefits of fracking, worked together to shut down coal mines and put miners out of jobs.

As an aside, anyone who voted for Obama voted to have their electric bills skyrocket; but they were unwittingly rescued from their idiocy by the fracking industry.

But Hillary came here this past week and people in coal country wanted none of it or her. Maybe Trump can't be trusted; but they know for a fact liberal democrats can't be trusted on jobs or energy---because they've proven it. The national Democrats are in bed with the Green Movement. Given their way, they'll get around to regulating the fracking industry which will kill jobs and put an economic burden on consumers. I could be wrong, but I don't see Trump doing that and he would likely reign in the EPA which would give coal a much needed boost in the energy market. Maybe it wouldn't be enough, but there's only one way to find out.

Hillary said she was going to kill coal mining jobs. What went unsaid, was that she would do it for the sake of ideology. Cheap natural gas doesn't mitigate that, because if natural gas didn't kill coal, she was going to finish the job Obama started.

Hillary stands zero chance in WV, even after dangling her billion dollar proposal. People here have common sense, we turned down Obama, twice. And their prepared to roll the dice on Trump.

Wrong Clinton promised to put coal miners out of work, because the Appalachian vote was considered by her X-spurtz to be insignificant to the greater climate change vote which is anti coal. However clean coal power plants are far more environmentally safe and clean when compared to nuclear. Funny how the environmentalist are now endorsing nuclear over fossil fuels.

Well, that's a miscalculation on their part. Blue collar workers in every industry pay attention to this sort of thing. Them, their jobs and families are mere abstractions to Hillary and other liberal democrats: if they happen to get in the way of the latest crusade, jobs go out the window.

Of course, one often drives the other, and for coal, both are the case. Cleaner technologies are taking over from dirtier ones—and coal is the dirtiest.

The shift happened first in more developed economies, but developing ones were still burning the black stuff.

Now, they’re stopping, too.

actually retraining doesnt solve the issue. Sure you get trained for the new job but does it exist in WV? If you have to move where will you find the money to go?

in the meantime since there is no longer a viable economy in the area the price of your house has bottomed out so you cant even sell that.

No matter, Trump is coming and he will be building new coal fired power plants that will be cleaner than anything before, and yes miners will still be needed

The coal industry itself is putting miners out of work, with automation and above ground operations.
Trump telling miners that he will reopen coal mines is like telling farmers he will re-employ their mules to plow their fields.

Coal truck drivers, electricians, heavy equipment operators, heavy equipment mechanics and etc would disagree with you. And these are hardly minimum wage jobs Obama and Hillary are pledged to kill.
