Hey Billy - Sniper Question

You interact much in Iraq with snipers? There was a really cool documenatry on the History Channel I saw yesterday on the best U.S. snipers. They interviewed a guy from Vietnam who one night basically without U.S. backup due to weather conditions killed 16 North Vietnamese in 31 seconds. They were a distant of 100 - 700 yards away crossing a low river. They said had he missed even one person he would have been killed. They did a reinactment of it. Absolutely amazing.

They also interviewed a guy who was a sniper in Fallujah who hit a guy on a balcony in the longest recorded snipe on record. Amazing all the calculations that go into a shot like that.

A BRITISH Army sniper has set a new sharpshooting distance record by killing two Taliban machinegunners in Afghanistan from more than a mile away.

Yea no shit. Wind, relative humidity, temperature, drop, angle of incidence, muzzle velocity of the round, balistic properties of the round, distance, etc, etc.

I love shooting but have amblyopia in my right eye and can barely hit the side of a barn at 100 ft so I am in complete awe of these guys.

No, never saw snipers much. I was motorized, so I didn't even see regular infantry unless it I happened to be part of a convoy to drop off supplies.

Stateside I got invited to be a marksmanship instructor but they wanted me to extend my EAS by 4 months. Fuck no.

And Tom, the Canadians currently hold the world record for the long shot. Not that they can compare to ole Gunny Hathcock. Sure someone might shoot a bit further, but I doubt anyone will ever do it with a machine gun. In one shot.

I am just going by the report in the Times which states that the previous Canadian record was broken.

The shooting — which took place while Harrison’s colleagues came under attack — was at such extreme range that the 8.59mm bullets took almost three seconds to reach their target after leaving the barrel of the rifle at almost three times the speed of sound.
The distance to Harrison’s two targets was measured by a GPS system at 8,120ft, or 1.54 miles. The previous record for a sniper kill is 7,972ft, set by a Canadian soldier who shot dead an Al-Qaeda gunman in March 2002.

Last I heard the Canadians broke it again last year. I'll have to search around.

There is nothing quite so nice as revering a man who kills other men, huh, Wacko?
Sick bastards!

I'll be straight up honest. I'm 38 years old and have never been in a fight in my life (well ok except for when i got jumped by four brothers who mistook me for another honkey and I had to get plastic surgery on my face to get it back to normal and that cost about $100K.)

Well if the world were perfect Low there would be no killing but unfortunately it is not like that. If you want to hate on the black folks I grew up with and have killed many times in Oakland you can do that sir. But with all due respect Low a Brit who lives in Hong Kong would not survive too long where I grew up. And I'll be honest I'm a *itch. I can't fight. But everyone else in my neighborhood can.

That is exactly what I meant.
To pay homage to the skill of killing a fellow human being is obscene.

The skill to which I referred was the ability to shot at smallish targets at exceedingly long ranges. I have never fired at a human being, but I have tried my hand at shooting at distance, and it is a skill that borders on art.

It does more than boarder on art. It is an art. It requires patience, dedication, personal sacrifice, and more often than not, a good deal of luck.

I have known two people in my life that I would consider excellent natural shooters. Both took that talent and developed it by shooting a LOT.

One was the best pistol shot I have personally seen. I think there is a natural talent there, but developing it turns it into an art.

Natural talent plays a role in any art. But more so the dedication and all that. Naturally, I am a poor shot. But I practice enough to MORE than make up for it. I'm a good great shot because I won't settle for less.

I don't quite understand the relevance of you comment about 'black folks', but as far as the rest is concerned I agree with you. Hence my choice not to travel to the US nor to live there.
I really do not know whether I can fight or not!! I boxed as a youth, and not to badly, but I too have never found it necessary to raise my fists in anger.
