This is the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was not the flag of the Confederate States of America. It was intended to identify the Army in battle. The fact that it was chosen by a bunch of mouth breathing, knuckle dragging Kluckers as a symbol of their group dedicated to hatred no more makes the flag a symbol of hate than does the fact that they burn crosses at their rallies and on peoples lawns, make the cross a symbol of hate.
What is this a symbol of?

the iron cross was also used by nazis and as a result became 'tainted' by it
the nazis have a lot to answer for in the usage and corruption of perfectly normal symbols

So is it your assertion that once a symbol becomes "tainted" by some group, that it should no longer be used?
the swastika was originally a symbol of light which is why the nazis adopted it
symbols evolve and sometimes move from good to evil through their usage
while most of the confederates fought honorably, the cause that they fought for (slavery and states rights) was less than honorable
the south's heritage from the civil was was sorrow and destruction
how the fuck is 'states rights' ( a misnomer in itself) less than honorable?
it depends on how strong the association/taint
And who gets to decide on how strong that "association/taint" is?

then you should also be indicting Lincoln and the Union, because the civil war didn't start because of slavery, nor did Lincoln continue fighting to free the slaves.when the 'right' is slavery

economics and the assault on them by the north. Why did the South secede, then?
when you come down to it, it must be an individual
however, if enough individuals think a particular symbol has become evil, then it tends to become evil in the general parlance - it is very subjective, as are most symbols
i think that the average us citizen thinks that a swastika represents the evil of the nazis or a confederate flag, the evil of slavery and the rebellion of the south to defend slavery
also, i think that the average white southerner thinks of the confederate flag as representing an honorable rebellion against repression
