COLUMBIA, South Carolina (NBC) -- Believing his faith would heal him, a Greenwood County, South Carolina man sat down in his recliner after an injury in March and never got up.

On Thursday, his wife explained why he stayed in the recliner until shortly before he died.

"The man totally believed in God and his healing," said Ada Webb.

In March, Webb's 550-pound husband, Tillmon, sat down in a recliner inside their trailer in Greenwood. Wearing nothing but a blanket, the 33-year-old didn't move from that recliner for the next eight months.

"He couldn't do nothing for his self and I couldn't do but so much," Webb explained.

Webb says Tillmon tore his ACL in March and drove to a doctor's office.

"They were gonna give him an appointment, but they wanted $300 up front, and we didn't have the money," said Webb.

Webb says he returned to the recliner, picked up his Bible and became determined that faith would heal his leg.

"He read his Bible daily, he spent his full focus on God," said Webb. "And he was literally waiting and praying for a Job miracle. If anybody knows the Bible and knows Job, he really and fully believed that God was going to heal him just like he did Job, because he said he couldn't think of a better testimony to go out and to tell people."

For eight months they had no visitors. Webb rarely left his side, and she tried to keep him clean.

"I couldn't get him rolled over to use a bedpan," said Webb.

Other than eating and reading the Bible, she says Tillmon posted sermons online and texted messages of faith through his cell phone.

"He wanted so much to get up and you know, he wanted to tell everybody what Jesus done," said Webb.

Webb says Tillmon consistently told her not to call for help. She says Wednesday morning he was in so much pain that she finally called an ambulance.

Greenwood County authorities say they found Tillmon covered with sores, and that he appeared to weigh about 800 pounds. They say he was stuck to his chair, and they had to saw the recliner apart. They cut a large hole around the front door to get him out.

He died at the hospital.

Webb says she has no regrets about leaving him in that recliner.

"If I feel anything right now, it's envy for him because I wish he had taken me with him," said Webb.

Greenwood County deputies will not charge Webb with a crime. They determined she had no malicious intent of neglect.

Neighbors at the trailer park said they had no idea Webb had a husband inside that trailer the whole time.

I'm sorry, but I'm really laughing at this right now.

ib1... this is quite possibly the dumbest thing you have posted... which is quite the accomplishment for you. The man didn't die because of his torn ACL. He died because he was a 500+ pound lard ass that sat in a chair and did nothing else. His obesity and laziness killed him. Not the ACL.

The guy couldn't move because his ACL was torn and couldn't afford a trip to the emergency room. This is clearly a failure of American healthcare combined with a healthy dose southern stupidity.

If that's the reason. Then that is a failure of our entire society.

A torn ACL is not a life threatening injury.

The man died from his obesity and refusal to get medical help.

Any publically funded hospital would have treated him and saved his life. Of course, weighing 550 lbs meant he didn't treat his own body with any respect.

Freak I agree with you, Ib1retard has sunk to a new lower level. The scarey thing is this tool is teaching peoples kids. What a simpleton.

As a religious person who believes in God and the Bible I have to say that this is sad. I guess the man missed the part of the Bible where Jesus himself said not in so many words, "If you're sick, go to the doctor."

Don’t take offense, Winter, you’re cool. But, first of all, the way the story reads he ballooned up from 500 pounds to 800 pounds because he couldn’t move because of the ACL. It seems pretty clear to the casual reader that the ACL was a contributing factor to his death.

Second, this is the only developed democratic country on the planet that would ask for 300 dollars up front for a doctor’s appointment. Not to mention the thousands of dollars it would have cost him for treatment, because he obviously had no insurance. Could he have gone to the emergency room? Yeah, he still would have been stuck with a twenty thousand dollar bill. Maybe message board posters with good health insurance can’t relate to this, but some poor working slobs don’t have 20 thousand bucks, and maybe they don’t want to go into bankruptcy for an ACL.

What kind of country is this, where we tell uninsured working people to just go to the emergency room, and suck up a twenty thousand dollar debt? Is that what we call a moral and effective healthcare system? Totally laughable.

I feel nothing but pity for this guy, even if his ignorance and his religion were contributing factors to his death. Somebody in Denmark doesn’t sit in their chair with an ACL stressing out about how to get money to fix an injury. It’s absolutely shameful.

I can relate to this as I have dealt with it indirectly in the past through charitable efforst and efforts in the congregation where I attend church. I honestly do not have an answer but I do have a question. What is the law concerning payment to a hospital for care? I have known a several people who have had large medical bills from emergency situations who have paid as little as $20 a month on those bills. As long as they were paying (basically what they could afford) on a monthly basis the hospital was OK with it. I don't know if it is that way any more as I haven't known anyone in this situation in a few years.

I don't doubt there were ways this guy could have saved his life. I don't doubt his ignorance contributed to his death.

But, a health care system shouldn't come down to people bargaining for their lives on a payment plan. A lot of poor slobs aren't savvy enough to figure out creative health care solutions. Health care shouldn't be complex or financially stressfull. Period. Like I said, in any other developed country this dude wouldn't be sitting in a chair asking God for help because he was stressed out about the financial requirements of treatment.

And really, does anyone with the most rudimentary knowledge of health and the human body not realize that being immobilized for long periods can kill you, or contribute to your death? Bed sores ain't no laughing matter, that shit can transition into gangrene and the body can go toxic.

Christian Scientists are quite obviously nuts. If its immoral to do anything but trust God to take care of you, why not just sit on the floor and starve? That's where their logic leads. You've got to take responsibility and action for yourself.

This reminds me of the story of the dude on the roof...

During a huge flood a man finds himself stranded on the roof of his home, unable to escape he begins to pray.

Along comes a neighbor in a row boat who shouts to him, "Hey! Get in and let's get out of here!"

He shouts back, "No! You go on! The Lord will save me!"

The man in the rowboat shrugs and takes off.

The man prays some more.

Along comes a stranger in a small boat with an outboard engine who exclaims, "I didn't think there was anybody left, but I came back just in case! Get in! Let's get out of here!"

The man says to the kind stranger, "No! You go on! The Lord will save me!"

The stranger shrugs and moves on...

The man again begins to pray. The water has gotten higher and his only support is the Chimney of his now former home...

Along comes a helicopter, they drop down a ladder shouting to the man to climb to safety, but he says again, "No! You go on! The Lord will save me!"

There were others to save so they moved on...

The man drowned, goes to heaven and asks St. Peter plaintively, "Why? Why didn't God save me?"

Peter answers, "What do you mean? God sent a rowboat, a motorboat, and a helicopter!"

Bullshit. There are these very cheap devices called CRUTCHES. There are also a hundred different ways the guy could have exercised to try to drop weight even with a torn ACL. The guy was over 500 pounds. He obviously didn't give a shit about his health. But like you, I am sure he had 1000 excuses and hundreds of OTHER people to blame for what happened to him.
