The biggest single waiver, for 351,000 people, was for the United Federation of Teachers Welfare Fund, a New York union providing coverage for city teachers. The waivers are effective for a year and were granted to insurance plans and companies that showed that employee premiums would rise or that workers would lose coverage without them, Santillo says.

Insurance costs were going up drastically without reform and we were headed for a cliff.

The financial burdens associated with health care and health insurance will only get worse over time without action.The cost of the average employer-sponsored health insurance plan (ESI) for a family will reach $24,000 in 2016. This represents an 84 percent increase over 2008 premium levels. Under this scenario, we estimate that at least half of American households will need to spend more than 45 percent of their income to buy health insurance.
Our health care system was severely broken due in large part to Wall Street's takeover of insurance policies and practices over the last 20 years. BOTH parties knew it and BOTH parties promised health care reform during the 2008 campaign.
BUT, when Obama won the election, Republicans made a deliberate decision to NOT work with the President or Democrats. They decided to become health care terrorists and worked to scare the shit out of people with lies, parrot Frank Luntz talking points created to destroy reform and defeat the President and bring about his Waterloo.

Try to wrap your head around the fact that premiums are going to continue to rise until there is a universal plan. That is why all the industrialized countries and some not-so-industrialized countries have universal plans.
Look at the statistics. Every country with a universal plan spends less per capita and the citizens in every country with a universal plan, without exception, insist on keeping their plan.
What is it you don't understand? What is confusing? What is not clear?

Where's the proof? Do you even know what the waivers are all about? Generally, these waivers allow people to keep the shitty insurance they have until they can get better insurance in 2014 when the exchanges kick in.

The funniest thing is that the waivers have nothing to do with increasing costs. Basically, the law phases the a ban on annual coverage caps. Next year the annual cap ceiling is set at $750,000 (I think). The plans that received these waivers are mostly "mini-med" plans for low wage workers which provide very modest coverage with very low annual caps for very low premiums. For example, a McDonald's fry cook can get health insurance for $14 a month but coverage is capped at $2,000 annually. These waivers simply allow those plans to continue to operate rather than leaving these employees with nothing at all until the exchanges kick in.

I read the link. This is fucking stupid. Last week people were complaining because McDonald's workers were going to lose their shitty insurance. This week people are complaining because McDonald's workers are going to keep their shitty insurance.
It's obvious what's going on here. The game is to start with the premise that the law sucks and then to find reasons why as we go along. That's fun and all, but don't expect everyone to jump on board with the never ending stream of bullshit.

The point is that the coverage is shitty and, while better than nothing at all, a $2,000 annual coverage cap isn't going to take you very far if you actually get sick. Thus, basic minimum coverage requirements will be implemented in 2014 with a ban on annual coverage caps. So, in 2014 the McDonald's worker can get better, cheaper coverage that he gets now. Until then, these shitty plans have to get waivers to continue to operate.
And yes, these are the results we were looking for.
Because the exchanges are not operating yet. Once the exchanges are operating, these waivers will be unnecessary. If the insurers cannot offer coverage to meet the minimum coverage requirements, fuck 'em.

So, when there are no waivers left, McDonald's workers get a mandated insurance package. And this package is going to be CHEAPER?!? Are you really that fuckoing moronically absolutely without any brains STUPID to believe that? YES, these "shitty" plans will go away. And so will the price tags. An insurance company can NOT meet the federal coverage requirements without increasing premiums. Period. Anyone who says different is too fucking stupid to walk upright. The bottom line is the people will be paying MORE for their coverage. People who have shitty coverage will get better coverage, but at prices above what that better coverage costs today. They will pay through the nose for it, which isn't too good a prospect for people who work at McDonalds and need every penny they make. THAT is why they are grabbing any and every waiver there is available out there.

And yes, it will be cheaper. I've seen the numbers. Better insurance will be cheaper for low wage workers because it will be subsidized by the revenue provisions of the bill. Again, you don't have to like it, but don't fucking lie about it. The big winners under the law are lower income workers.
The waivers are a stop gap measure until the law is fully implemented.
