hazing deaths are all across the country, from alcohol to whatever.....

so far, the frats are given a pass, some DA's are going after them.....

innocent partying/fun??

what say you......

I think it's pretty easy to define, but since that's what I think I probably got it all backwards, but here we go:

If it's nothing more than "fun" than it's acceptable.

If it results in harm or distress to the body then it's crossed the line.

Chugging a beer or two is fine...making a guy drink 25 shots of Everclear is not.

Some pushups or other similar physical activities: acceptable.

Pushups into a cat box/bobbing for cat poo: not good.

You get the idea...

Liable death. I hated frat boys when I was in college. What a perfect waste of a college education.
What better way to show to a frat boy that life isn't all fun and games then to actually hold them accountable for their actions for once in their life. I remember when I was in college a kid almost died from alcohol poisoning from those moron frat boys playing one of their games. They should have prosecuted every one of them involved to the fullest extent of the law and then kicked their asses out of the school.

Doesn't sound like too many people on this board were in a fraternity? My frat was good because it did not haze. But to those who think frats only party don't fully understand what they are all about.

Frats are not much more than a white collar gang. They do more harm to society in general more then they do good. I don't care what they do with their members, but from what I've seen they do more harm than good there as well.

Agreed. Some fraternities and sororities do a lot of good in the community. If the "hazing" is done in a good natured way and is not demeaning or endangering, provided that there is no coercion and that the hazee's participation is entirely voluntary, there shouldn't be a problem. The difficulty with that is that there may be too much reliance on the wisdom of some very immature individuals, and that such immaturity is frequently amplified when it is in any way in charge during a group situation.

There very often is also an element of cruelty and sadism in those proceedings (see my "immaturity" comment). Again the group situation may lend itself to a perception of a diffusion of responsibility for those undesirable actions. That's no excuse and those responsible should be held accountable for their actions.

Were you a nerd or something?

Nothing worse than a bunch of testosterone charged males fueled with alcohol. Talk about a recipe for catastrophe.

I was definitely a nerd in college. But it paid off, landing me a 70 hour/ week job that started a week before my last final. :)

I had my runs in with them. I had a roommate that was pledging, and his disgusting personal habits became an issue. He got the frat thug to harass me, calling me up at 3 am nightly. I dealt with him though, too. Outwitted him and threatened him with expulsion from his gang.

Frats can be ugly there's no doubt about it. Too bad too. Gives the ones that want to do well and be successful a bad break.

Hoop's vehemence kind of speaks of a kid that was mercilessly harassed. I sense a twinge of some bullying.

Nothing wrong with nerds. :good4u:
Any kid who grew up below average size and stood up for himself was bullied. In grade school I was young for my class and didn't take crap from anyone, including upperclassmen. It was very easy to outwit these bullies and by using my smarts and speed I dished out way more then I got.

I had this older kid chase me home from 4th grade one time- he was twice my size. It had rained the day before so I used that bit of knowledge against him. I would slow down a bit to let him catch up then speed ahead, and I ran him long enough to wind him real good. I had him follow me real close through a side yard straight at a thorn bush, then turned hard right before it, sending him sliding in the wet grass straight into it, face first. I got about ten feet away and laughed at him, all bloody and sucking wind. :)

There's a definite gender distinction there! I, too, was young for my grade and tend to be on the petite side anyway. The other kids, far from bullying me, tended to be more protective and indulgent. That can get old too, but it's far more pleasant than being bullied!
