Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono (Hawaii) sparked uproar on social media on Tuesday, over her asking U.S. Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett if she had ever committed sexual assault.

During the second day of hearings for Judge Barrett, Hirono explained to the nominee that she always asks the same two questions to candidates being considered for lifetime appointments.

The first question was, "Since you became a legal adult, have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors, or committed any physical or verbal harassment or assault of a sexual nature?"

Judge Barrett answered "No, Senator Hirono."

"Have you ever faced discipline or entered into a settlement related to this kind of conduct?" the senator asked in her follow-up.

"No, Senator," Barrett replied.


Hirono's questions drew condemnation on Twitter from users who viewed them as inappropriate and insulting.

Director Robby Starbuck tweeted out a video of the exchange, writing, "Here's resident Senate lunatic, Mazie Hirono asking Amy Coney Barrett 'Have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors... or committed assault of a sexual nature?' Amy's kids just watched their Mom get asked if she's a rapist. Pure evil."

"So disrespectful. Sen. Hirono is shameless," another person wrote. Someone else tweeted, "Just when you think they can't possibly go any lower @maziehirono comes thru and lowers the bar even more."

Senate hearings are rough, perhaps she should have left her children at home. A Senator should not have to censure their questions for children in the room.

On a serious note, I doubt even a DEMOCRAT would ask those questions of a woman unless they have some "recently discovered" accuser in the wings who "just had to speak out" now, years later because "she's being nominated for the Supreme Court", etc.

It's the Judge Roy Moore/Kavanaugh playbook.

Hirono essentially asked ACB if she ever raped anyone and Booker asked her about "white supremacy". They are very odd questions. Hirono says she asks that question of EVERY nominee. I somehow doubt it.

But, those questions give me the sneaky suspicion that a "surprise" is in the offing. Maybe some new letter to DiFi? Or some law student coming forward alleging that ACB made him/her/it feel uncomfortable?

ACB is crushing the hearing, but I don't trust the democrat party. Something is fishy. I could be wrong and I hope I am.

If the dems are up to their old tricks, I hope that Graham, McConnell et all just ram it through
