Happy zombie Jesus day

I was never able to fathom the desire and sheer glee in mocking Jesus.

Even if we don't accept he was divine, if even a fraction of what is written about him in the NT is true, he was a radical and extraordinary example of morality and egalitarianism by the standards of the first century.

Even the preeminent atheist Frederich Nietzsche had a grudging admiration for Jesus, who he called the only true Christian who ever lived.

On an academic side note, scholars have identified passages in the Babylonian Talmud that some (definitely not all) conclude refer to Jesus:

Jesus was a sorcerer with disciples (b Sanh 43a–b)

Healing in the name of Jesus (Hul 2:22f; AZ 2:22/12; y Shab 124:4/13; QohR 1:8; b AZ 27b)

As a Torah teacher (b AZ 17a; Hul 2:24; QohR 1:8)

As a son or disciple that turned out badly (Sanh 103a/b; Ber 17b)

As a frivolous disciple who practiced magic and turned to idolatry (Sanh 107b; Sot 47a)

Jesus' execution (b Sanh 43a-b)

Jesus as the son of Mary (Shab 104b, Sanh 67a)

I mock this story because it's clearly a fairy tale and it's making life difficult for anyone who isn't healthy and white and straight. We can't have stem cell research or peace for gay people because a large segment of the voting block believes that a Jewish zombie floated into the clouds to atone for the sin of a woman fooled by a talking snake into eating magical fruit. It's worthy of ridicule.

1 Corinthians 1:18-24 NKJV— For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

You are on extremely weak ground if your mockery and derision of a 1st century Jewish mystic is based on 21st century stem cell research.

Donald Trumpf is an atheist, who imposed restrictions on stem cell funding.

Joe Biden is a Catholic, and he lifted those restrictions on stem cell funding.

Trump did it to appease the RW Xtians.

IMO it is distasteful and wrong to mock other people's religions, no matter how wacky they might seem. That being said, in America we have allowed the dominant religion to have far too much influence in government. That needs to stop.

I mock rightwing evangelical fundamentalists all the time.

I don't think I've ever mocked and derided Jesus of Nazareth, Muhammed, The Buddha, or Confucius. They strike me as arcane moral teachers from antiquity who themselves have nothing to do with American politics.

And Jesus said, thrust your hand inside the wound in my side if thou doest not believe I am a Zombie.

Frederich Nietzsche, who is arguably history's most famous atheist, was savage to institutional Christianity in Europe. But he always maintained a certain grudging respect for Jesus, who he claimed was history's only true Christian.

Jesus was an itinerant end-times preacher who believed that the world would end in a generation. His earliest followers believed this, too, and the NT is a funny chronicle of Christians’ struggle to deal with the failed Parousia.

WOW!!

You mean religion, like all other human institutions changed and evolved over two thousand years??!

This is a brilliant deduction, and possibly the most shocking insight ever delivered on JPP!
