There really isn't a word for stupid mistake so we fall back on the "accident" mantra. It wasn't an accident, the toddler usually pulls the trigger on purpose as they don't comprehend the consequences.

Stupidity is not making sure your dangerous tools aren't in the reach of a toddler, it is leaving them around where a kid can get them.

Kind of like always being beside the tub when your baby is in it... Just walk away for a "second" and you can find a dead kid. Most of the time it doesn't happen, but it isn't an "accident", it was playing the odds.
