Gun falls out of 16 y/o’s backpack

True. It doesn't help that the Teacher's unions don't give a shit about students, that government bureaucrats are more interested in the paperwork than solutions, and that such large schools are run like General Motors not your local schoolhouse.
That is all true...

That's how a prison would do it. Security first, getting things done... meh. File them through subject to pat searches and wanding. Make it stricter than the TSA at an airport. Turn the school into a prison.

Like any of that will fix anything...

Good idea, make ‘em wear uniforms, lock em in, feed em gruel.

School or prison?

I really look forward to having a longer discussion about the situation in schools these days but it's going to have to be later... I shall return. I have a bit of experience ;)

More absurd anti-labor talk from a right-wing lunatic.

Really?

Teacher unions, which forced long lockdowns, now outrageously claim student learning loss is no big deal

Schools Don’t Spread Covid. Teachers' Unions Don’t Care.
Their insistence that classrooms be shut down during the pandemic contrary to the science punishes the kids they are supposed to care about.

LA Teachers Union to Kids: We Don’t Actually Care About You

Closed schools are a harmful inequity, but teachers’ unions don’t give a damn

It’s hard to forget former National Education Association (NEA) General Counsel Bob Chanin’s farewell address during the 2009 NEA national convention. “It is not because we care about children; and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child,” Chanin boasted. “The NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power.”

Why Do Teachers Join The Union?

Teacher's unions don't give a shit about students. They care about dues paying members and the power they wield, that's all.

increased security......metal detectors are an obvious answer to the OP.......

For student safety we should reduce the number of students per class. I say two to a classroom. To make sure no trans funny business is going on, the toilet should be right there in the room with them. We know kids like to fight on the way home, so they should just stay at the school over the course of their education.

I think Gardner's suggestion about smaller schools/class sizes is good, but in today's political climate, unlikely to happen. And a single door with a metal detector -- or even two -- is ridiculous.

At one of our local High Schools a 15 year old kid kid had his backpack under his desk and accidentally unzipped, his handgun slided out into the floor where the teacher was the first to notice it…

This was not reported by the media and the kid is being removed to a school for troubled kids…

So, other than reducing the availability of firearms, what can we do about the situation that happened much more than is reported?

Any ideas? My kids go to these schools!

Clear backpacks like many corporations force their employees to use on site

It’s a great idea, I tried to get one created and built but the red tape in Tallahassee was outrageous and I kept being told it was not in the budget, but the numbers brought it in under cost for the number of students. They just could not see it. Finally it got tentatively budgeted until Covid took that money. I gave up.

Does Gardner think that I'm going to actually open those stupid links?

He's an anti-labor wingnut, and I've already given him more attention that he deserves.

Sorry, T. A., but I don't take sides against unions,
and I certainly don't respect anyone who does...

because they're pretty much all assholes.

Unions have positives and negatives (especially in schools) but they certainly have their place.

Clear backpacks aren’t going to stop a kid from having a gun in his pocket.

When the world gets to that point, we should probably all stay home.

That's my reaction to TSA as well.

Contemporary people are content to live in a bubble-pack world, I guess, but it's far too out of character for me to ever be that timid.

Why would a kid think they need a gun in school? Is he a bully or is he being bullied?

There's also the factor of the parents. How can a 15 year old pay for a gun? Average cost is $500, but there are cheaper ones for $200.

Why would a kid think they need a gun in school? Is he a bully or is he being bullied?

It's not complicated.

If other kids who may not like you have guns, then perhaps having a gun yourself is the prudent thing to do.
I suggest two. One in your book bag and one in your gym bag.

Did you ever live in a city, Oom? 99% of it is a huge advantage, but there are downsides to everything.

No, neef, I dislike cities because they are full of violent, racist fuckwads like you.

Do you understand that there are about 5000 students going to that school, we don’t have the budget to metal detect all of them. Tallahassee won’t give us that money. Additionally, it would be a very complex operation to do it in a secure way. Maybe it’s the answer, but we would need additional tax money for sure.

raise the taxes on tort lawyers......
