Guess What? The ‘Knockout Game’ Is America’s Latest Phony Panic

No, I would not. But I would be just as concerned of I met up with five, teenaged WHITE American males so dressed. When I initially read about this a week or so ago, the idea that it was only a bunch of black kids never entered my mind. I deal with white thugs much more often where I live. Teenaged thugs are teenaged thugs regardless of color. I think the writer of the article is stretching it a bit to find racism in the reporting of this, much less some sort of agenda to make people suspicious of young black men.

Agreed. Reminds me of the Chris Rock bit he did after Columbine where he said if you are white and a teenager I am afraid of you! Punk kids are punk kids and they come in all races.

String you can show me a data point which says crime is rare and while that may be statistically true if you live in certain areas you would know that is not reality.

Oakland robberies surge as investigations sputter

Again, this story has nothing to do with the notion that you may be more vulnerable to crime based on where you live. The point of this story is to scare old white people into believing they have a general reason to be afraid of being the victim of a black assailant.

I lived near Oakland for three years. I never felt unsafe there. Though the risk is much higher crime is still rare there. If the violent crime rate is 500 per 100,000 you can increase it 100% and it is still pretty rare. In my opinion, the more important stat is that crime is on the decline. This is bad news for the racists which is why they are relying on viral marketing tactics and hysteria to make their propaganda more effective.

The fact that you ignore what is obvious and try to change the subject is troubling. You are providing cover for them. The sensible right needs to stop pussyfooting around and confront these racists or abandon them.

I'm not responding to knockout because they are several isolated incidents. I pay it no mind. If you have lived in Oakland then you would know there are areas where crime is a very real occurrence and wouldn't be trying to use statistics to claim these people wrongly live in fear.

Yes, crime is rare.

Tell those dead people its nothing to worry about.

The Cons need something to get all riled up about and focus there anxiety about how society is falling apart.

"If it only saves one life"... Gah, why do people think that it's okay to play the sympathy card whenever it is their own beliefs that are challenged, but think it is bad for the "other side" to do it in challenge?

Saying that 7 people died from this while caring not one whit about other types of death and therefore we need to "do something" more than is already being done within the laws that already make this illegal is a poor argument.

Should you panic because this has happened? Only if you panic each time you hear about a car accident, they happen more often and kill far more people than this. That this is "rampant" is silly. Should you know about it and therefore pay attention to what is happening around you? Sure. Should we make new laws just for this? Not just no, but Hell no.

When the Press Perceives a Crime Trend, Turn On Your B.S. Detector

http://reason.com/blog/2013/11/26/when-the-press-perceives-a-crime-trend-t

In his 1999 book Random Violence, which I recommend highly, the sociologist Joel Best points out that "criminologists usually doubt claims about crime waves. Crime waves, they say, are really waves in media attention: they occur because the media, for whatever reason, fix upon some sort of crime, and publicize it." Genuine spikes in crime do occur, of course, but the press has a habit of spotting patterns that aren't there.

I recycled that last paragraph from a blog post I wrote in January. Back then the alleged crime wave involved mass shootings. Now the press is focused on "knockout," which my colleague Jacob Sullum wrote about here yesterday. This time the alleged crime wave does not involve guns and is being blamed on black people, so the skeptics tend to be on the left and the hysterics tend to be on the right. (I like to think of Reason as a place where we're skeptical about all the bullshit crime-trend stories.) But the statistical support for the idea that there has been a surge in random attacks on bystanders, whether or not those assaults are a "game," is absent. The only thing that is spiking for sure is media attention, and that has less to do with the number of crimes than the presence of a storyline that the press can plug those crimes into.

Fun fact: In 1989, many reporters became convinced that there was a crime trend called "wilding," which (naturally) involved random assaults on strangers. This was a byproduct of the Central Park jogger case: A police officer apparently misheard a reference to the Tone Loc song "Wild Thing" as "wilding" and the media ran with it, without bothering to say to themselves, "You know, 'wilding' is kind of a dorky word. Are a bunch of hardened thugs really going to use it?"

well it is black males committing the crimes

as far as the media is concerned they are doing just the opposite only reporting it as teenagers which doesn't give us insight into who is really doing it.

Yes, white folk can be thuggish, but I don't see any reports of whites doing this. It is like seeing reports of Christians flying airplanes into buildings while screaming JESUS RULES

Well, then go start your own thread. This is about this knockout bullshit.

Your last sentence is a completely dishonest strawman. Really, it is way below you. I said nothing like that. You are trying to hijack the thread and are pretending I said something I did not.

Exactly, that's called being reactionary and its fueled by media hype. There are many levels of reactionary politics, on a different scale the Iraq war was reactionary.

I stay riled up, Jarod. Didn't you know that? I'm an angry white...er..a..American Indian. And society's been falling apart for over 200 years. ;)

ROTFLOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!! This guy is clueless and doesn't watch the news much.

This "knock out game" just shows the sentimentality of some American youths. You can blame so called "free speech" and gangster rap.

There is no better way to become misinformed than to rely on crappy television news. I prefer to read and the stats show crime is down and declining.

Gangster rap! Lol...

It's all fudged numbers. Crime is certainly not down. There are thousands of crimes committed everyday. Go pay a visit to your local court house and you will see.

If you think crime is down? What would you account for that? Record employment? ROTFLOL!!!

This isn't about a 'crime wave' or typical 'random violence'....
this is a very very specific crime.

A crime that gets shown on youtube as a funthing.....
a crime that is caught on security cameras that makes it undeniable,
in broad daylight,
on crowded streets,
committed by a very specific and well recognized group of people,
happening to a very specific type of victim.

not random at all, but very specifically race based
raced based for both the victim and perp.
a classic hate crime, by definition.

And, your story about 'wilding' is total bullshit.....the thugs themselves when caught and questioned used that very term....it was what they called it...wilding.
http://tinyurl.com/d3rkyl2
Wilding was and is a real as the air between your ears.
