The obvious needless destruction that a government shutdown does is forces the government to pay more interest, for no good. That means more deficits. And remember, the government does not have the government to bail it out, which is what Republicans depend on when they stop paying their business debts.

Beyond that, shutting down essential services means damage that costs more money to fix. Essential workers start finding more stable paychecks. Many of those workers were willing to take lower paychecks to have more stable paychecks, and to know they are doing good for society. A shutdown destroys that reasoning.

Every shutdown brings us closer to societal collapse. What will finally do it is impossible to predict, but it will happen if we keep having shutdowns.

A shutdown is the step before a default. A default, or even the step before a default, increases interest rates.

After the shutdown, everything is paid back, with interest. The maintenance damage is done, and needs repairs. That means it costs more money than if the shutdown had not happened. Add in the higher interest rates, and it costs real money.

It is impossible for our government to default in anything but a technical sense. Only an idiot would allow an unnecessary technical default because you are angry at society for not taking you seriously.
