Russian democracy activists and opposition figures praise Gorbachev
Meanwhile, key voices of Russia’s opposition were largely united in mourning the loss of someone they saw as a liberal ally and a believer in democracy.

The Nobel-prize-winning editor-in-chief of independent Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov wrote in an article Wednesday that Gorbachev gave Russians “thirty years of peace without a threat of a global nuclear war.”
“The man named Gorby no longer stands between the world and a nuclear explosion. Who could replace him? Who?” Muratov said.
Others remembered more specific achievements of the former leader, with Moscow’s former chief rabbi Pinchas Goldschmid, who left Russia due to his opposition to the invasion of Ukraine, praising Gorbachev for lifting travel restrictions on Soviet citizens.
“Three million Soviet Jews owe him their freedom,” Goldschmid tweeted.

The reality is that this man had not been relevant in decades.
History doesn't rely on the consent of barely educated MAGA rubes.
Navalny is most likely correct: history is going to be generous to Gorbachev. He let the Eastern European nations assert their independence without resorting to violence, he did not resort to violence as the Soviet republics dissolved the union, he willinglly and peaceably stepped away from power without resorting to violence, and he introduced the seeds of democracy, liberal reform, and transparency to Russia which continue to germinate beneath the surface.
Tyranny is not always going to hold sway in Russia, and when a democratic Russia blooms it will trace it's legacy in some way to the times of Mikhail Gorbachev.

In 2016, the former Soviet leader said that he “always favors the will of the people, and most people in Crimea wanted reintegration with Russia.” He never commented on Russia’s more recent full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but his close friend, journalist Alexey Venediktov, claimed in July that Gorbachev was against the war: “He hasn’t spoken publicly, but I can tell you that he’s upset. Naturally, he understands. It was his life’s work. Freedom is Gorbachev’s business.”
