Gorbachev passes

Gorbachev made the agreement with NATO that there would be no eastward NATO advance as part of the scheme to dismantle the USSR.
Gorbachev now appears as an honest peace-broker. NATO looks like shit.

Only because of Yeltsin and Putin having power

It was a purposeful coup to remove Gorbachev from office and render him powerless.

Yelstin and the leaders of the Ukraine SSR and the Belarussian SSR collectively decided to dissolve the Union, thus sidelining Gorbachev, with the intention of maintaining a future East Slavic coalition through the CIS.

Putin will send a condolence telegram to the family.

What else Russia will do has yet to be announced.

Maybe nothing?

Did he ever fix that splotch on his head before he died?
Russian medicine isn't supposed to be that bad.
I think they invented lasik eye surgery.
They must have some decent cosmetic people there too.

I was in a college group of pre-law students, On a trip to European capitals. The last city was Moscow and we had a luncheon with him.

I once listened to Lt Viktor Belenko speak around Spring 1980 at NAS Whiting Field, FL. It was a secure briefing, and we didn't even know who was speaking. Afterwards, we were held in place until he was airborne with his security team. We later learned that there were two jets, one with Belenko onboard, which took off in opposite directions. As it happened, I'd recently read the book, "Mig Pilot: The Final Escape of Lt. Belenko" by John Daniel Barron. It was very interesting for insights into the Soviet Union of the late 1970s and also Belenko's cultural shock of being in the United States. His talk covered a lot of the same. He was a little difficult to understand, but interesting.

The defection of Viktor Belenko, the pilot who stole the super-secret Soviet MiG-25 fighter jet
"On Sep. 6, 1976, Lt Viktor Belenko, a pilot of a PVO unit based at Chuguyevka air base north of Vladivostok (some sources state Sakharovka air base) failed to return from a sortie. His superiors would hardly have been too upset if he had crashed into the Sea of Japan; as it were, the news that Belenko had landed at Hakodate International airport came as a severe shock."

Gorbachev will be buried in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife, Raisa, who died in 1999, TASS revealed, citing a source familiar with the family’s wishes.

Gorbachev wasn a true believer in socialism, but he was the first Soviet leader to believe in openess, transparency, and an incremental movement towards democratic socialism.

His legacy may have been stained by subsequent events, but I don't think his impact on history can be understated.
