Venezuela didn't have a diversified economy and relied solely on oil revenues, so when OPEC dropped the price per barrel of oil by increasing production, Venezuela's oil revenues declined because the global price per barrel declined...so Venezuela faced a budget crisis because OPEC ramped up production to drive down the price per barrel which ended up driving down oil revenues.

That's why it's incredibly stupid to pin all your revenues on energy, and that's why states like TX, OK, and ND all got nice, fat bailouts when the price per barrel sunk in 2015-16.

It doesn't matter who was in charge in Venezuela, what matters is that Venezuela went all-in on an energy economy and that ended up biting them in the end because they don't control the global price per barrel, OPEC does.

We were never energy independent because we don't own any of the oil that oil companies extract from under our feet.

THEY own that oil and THEY sell that oil to whomever pays the most.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that the US has no leverage in the global oil markets so long as we allow multinational companies to extract and sell the oil from under our feet?

You do not get true energy independence unless you nationalize the corporations that are selling the oil they extract from under our feet to foreign buyers.
