The Republicans - who never hesitate to laud police and firefighters when it suits them politically - are causing mass layoffs all across America that directly impact fire and police protection.

They deliver a slap in the face to public safety workers by claiming America can't afford to staff police and fire departments, when in reality, they refuse to ask the ultra-wealthy to pay anything toward the common good.

Check out a few of these examples of 'small government'...

Would these be the same police & firefighters that during the OWS protests, the little turds called them every foul mouth name in the book?

This problem is the same everywhere with public union's, cities can no longer afford to pay the ridiculous benefits that were given out to them.

Even in liberal California, they recognize they can no longer afford to do business as they used to.

Gov. Jerry Brown, who is calling for sweeping reforms in public-employee pensions.

A Times analysis based on 2009 payrolls shows that cities and counties in California would save an estimated $1.3 billion if local government workers statewide paid what the governor's office determines to be the normal employee share of pension contributions. Brown says workers should be contributing about 8% of their paychecks to their own retirement. Police and firefighters, who have more generous pensions, should pay about 9%, Brown says.

maybe you should place the blame SQUARELY on the shoulders where it rightly belongs.......like the local governments responsible for it, instead of nanny state feds.

The blame belongs to Republicans, who refuse to ask the richest 1% to contribute to maintaining the fabric of our society. As a result of decreased revenues and slashed budgets, communities can no longer pay for services funded mostly by working class Americans - many of whom are n ow unemployed as a result of the failure of supply side economics.

Police, firefighters, EMTs, teachers and many others join the swollen ranks of the unemployed while the GOP passes non-binding resolutions reaffirming "In God We Trust" as the national motto.

The Republicans continue to insist that tax cuts for the rich and bailouts for bankers' bonuses will 'create jobs'.

The voters will remember in November.

Wrong. Facts, backed by links to factual reports that support my argument aren't "liberal talking points", especially since I'm not liberal.

Did anyone say they should?
