GOP Going After Medicare/Social Security

We have no health system that will save people who get seriously ill. Most bankruptcies have a huge medical component. If you live long enough, you will likely face serious health costs that will cripple your savings. You would have to save millions to stay afloat.

A million Americans a year, go on Medical Tourism trips. They go abroad for medical care they cannot afford here. They can go abroad, get good care, stay for a couple weeks, come home and be money ahead. Those without means, suffer.

Increase FICA liability to $200k/year. Problem solved.

You mean take the cap off SS earnings? We already discussed that. No studies show it will make up the shortfall by itself--and that is removing the cap entirely rather than just raising it from $128,400 to $200,000.

and they would have the safety net.........

Pensions have been slashed. Companies have taken away health care that was negotiated. The deals they had are melting away. Medicare covers 80 percent. 20 percent of a serious operation can destroy your finances. Once you retire your income stays relatively flat and inflation can eat your finaces away. Getting old can be scarry. You are not in charge .

fuck pensions.......just a dodge to try to avoid paying income taxes anyway.........fuck gold premium health plans......I had to buy my insurance with after tax dollars until the Bush tax cuts.......you were never in charge......

You could always attach a FICA liability to certain cap gains if it will help. Is a study necessary to consider the benefit of raising the individual (including employer portion) contribution from app. $16,000/year to $24,000/year for high income earners?

Too many seniors saved little or nothing. A recent article said bankruptcies by seniors have increased dramatically.

That sounds like their problem if they made bad choices. The rest of us that did plan for our retirement shouldn't be forced to be a part of such a foolish program to cover for their dumbasses.

What do you not get about it not being the place of those that did plan and prepare for the future to be responsible for those that didn't prepare and plan?

Will the higher income earners get a larger distribution since they would be contributing so much more than the low income leeches that would have nothing without such a system?

How many of those you say suffer or file bankruptcy due to medical bills have you personally supported since you claim to care so much? If you haven't, STFU about someone else doing it.

The issue was whether eliminating the cap would cover the coming shortfall in SS benefits and it would not. Although it would help, it would also hurt by taking that much money out of the economy and costing individuals and employers a substantial amount. Reducing unneeded benefits is a better alternative than increasing taxes and government spending.

I said nothing about government being responsible for those that did not save. I only pointed out recent trends in bankruptcies for seniors and the fact that many of them have little or no savings or investment accounts. To means test Social Security only punishes those who did save and rewards those who chose not to.

The problem with SSI is the disability end, not the retirement end. Cut down on the handouts to able bodied individuals, and you reap savings. Otherwise, there is no answer, unless you're in favor of means testing for retirement?

Ryan says Republicans to target welfare, Medicare, Medicaid spending in 2018

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said Wednesday that congressional Republicans will aim next year to reduce spending on both federal health care and anti-poverty programs, citing the need to reduce America's deficit.

SSI comes from general revenue, not Social Security. Maybe you mean SSDI (Social Security disability) which is more of a problem than retirement benefits for now; but, in the future the increase in retirees will also create a problem. The number of baby boomer retirees will increase from 38 million to 72 million and there will be only 2 workers for each SS beneficiary.

I agree with you that there are too many disabled on SSI and SSDI. There is pressure on workers to approve their disability claims because the money benefits the local community and government agencies are funded based on numbers.

It should have been done long ago. Medicare admits to $60 billion in waste and fraud and Social Security is paying tens of millions to dead people (it doesn't know how many). Medicare should go to competitive bidding to reduce costs. Some of the anti-poverty programs were proven not to work years ago--their main benefit is providing jobs to workers in the programs.

MORONIC

'nuff said about that stupidity.
