Minnesota's government has hung up the `closed' sign after the governor and lawmakers failed to agree on a state budget.



Parks, road projects and rest stops are just a few of the first noticeable casualties.




State worker layoffs could be next.






Talks between Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and top Republicans fell apart well before a midnight deadline.




Dayton demanded tax increases on top earners, but the GOP refused.

So, the Governor refused to sign a budget that was proposed without tax increases? Sounds like the Governor decided to shut down the State Government because he wants to distribute still more money.
 
Former Governor Tim Pawlenty has said the shutdown is a good thing.



Pawlenty shut the state government down in 2005.






Current Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican legislative leaders started the year facing a $5 billion deficit that economists said Pawlenty left behind.





Current Republicans in the state legislature have called for spending cuts, including deeper reductions in health and welfare spending.






Dayton, by contrast, wants to cut the deficit by raising taxes on couples earning more than $300,000 and individuals making more than $180,000.






Dayton and some moderate Republicans have said they are open to compromise solutions like eliminating tax breaks or authorizing a casino.

The plan on the radical right is to have this country on it's knees by the next election then blame it on Obama. The only way to do this is by following the same obstructionist plan that's been in place since the last election. The right doesn't care about the people in this country their only goal is to profit from the pain and labor of others.

It looks like they will do or say anything in their lust for power, and they are also fighting amongst themselves.

I'm not seeing much coordination or planning.
 
They have a long list of plans. Destroy medicare, destroy medicaid, destroy social security, destroy education, destroy the middle class and the unions that built that middle class, destroy the economy and force millions into poverty and ultimately destroy our standard of living.

John Boehner called it a gimmick, Paul Ryan called it sugar high. Lamar Alexander and Jeb Hensarling both criticized it as short-term stimulus -- apparently that's a bad thing. Would Republicans really oppose a tax cut for business that created jobs? This is sort of beyond the pale. So if they'd oppose even something so suited to their tastes ideologically, it shows that they're just opposing anything that would help create jobs. It almost makes you wonder if they aren't trying to slow down the economic recovery for political gain."

Hey Troll, why don't you try to prove me wrong instead of groaning. You can't dispute my posts. Please show me how conservatives have improved this country over the past 30 yrs. Show me how they are working to improve our country today. Please show me how they are representing people and not a small group of billionaires.

The best way your side can win is to drive this country into the ditch and blame it on Obama. Prove me wrong that this is not your plan or just groan like a catfish out of water.

Is that what you said when Tim Pawlenty shut down Minnesota's government in 2005, Dancin' Dalai Damocles?


He says he wishes the shutdown had gone on longer.


Now Pawlenty is wishing more economic devastation on Minnesotans because he wants to keep the rich happy.

Dayton has proposed raising taxes on couples earning more than $300,000 and individuals making more than $180,000. He said Thursday night that he had offered to target the tax increase to even higher earners, those making more than $1 million a year.

Republicans have opposed any new taxes or new revenue sources, arguing instead that the state should rely on spending cuts, including deeper reductions in health and welfare spending than Dayton is willing to accept.

Tim Pawlenty said that he wished the 2005 government shutdown he presided over would have lasted longer, and that the paralysis underway now in the state could be a good thing.

“I think it was nine days (of shutdown) at that time, and I think we could have gotten a better deal if we had allowed that to continue for a while and the people of Minnesota would have seen the issues play out a little longer,” the Republican presidential hopeful said Thursday night at a press conference at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport.

More than 23,000 state workers will be affected by the shut down, which will see state parks and highway rest areas closed for the Independence Day holiday weekend.




The shut down even affects traffic cameras and the websites of state agencies.




Dayton said his last offer would have raised income taxes only on people earning more than $1 million dollars a year - about 7,700 people or 0.3 percent of taxpayers.




Republicans rejected the proposal...
