GOP Debate Tonight..

Did anyone catch this one? What did you think? Here's my take...

Huntsman and Pawlenty are done.. stick a fork in 'em. They were the two biggest losers tonight, in my opinion.

Gingrich actually impressed me more than anyone up there, but I think Newt has too much baggage and too much fubar to contend with.

Ron Paul just continues to slide off the deep end for me.. I once supported Paul, and I've always liked a lot of what he had to say, but the more I see him up there in these debates, the more he starts to sound like a pinhead liberal. They ask him a question about the spending/debt problem, and he tears off in an anti-war rant like some kind of 60s flower child! What the fuck, Ron? Did he forget which party's nomination he's trying to win?

Santorum, again... here's someone I like, and agree with a lot of what he says, but he seemed to have this hard-on to bash Michelle Bachmann tonight, and I can't figure that one out. He lobbed a few grenades at Paul and Romney as well, but he relentlessly went after Bachmann. I think that hurts him, because it's obvious what he is trying to do.

Cain brought the same message, the same points, the same replies... nothing new or different there. I believe he will end up being a strong 3rd in this campaign, but just doesn't quite have enough to win it. Just my gut instinct on that.

Bachmann didn't seem as sharp tonight for some reason, I get the feeling that she didn't feel well, she came across that way to me.. a little flat, and not as poised as she was in the earlier debate from SC. Romney was a smooth operator, he did just what he needed to do to get through the debate, although he continues to have trouble explaining Romneycare.

I wasn't impressed with the format, although it was better than the idiotic "Deep Dish or Thin Crust, Mr. Cain?" type of questions we saw from the other debate. It seemed like all the question were phrased as so to put the candidate on the spot, kind of a 'gotchya' thing.. I couldn't figure out why they did that. It almost sounded like they got liberals to write the questions... Ms. Bachmann, if you are elected president, will you be submissive to your husband? I mean... come on, really?

Winner: Newt Gingrich (for what it's worth)
Losers: Pawlenty and Huntsman.

To be fair Dix you have to forget about baggage, or anything that happened in the past. A debate should be evaluated on its own. General you made a good assessment.

Newt's obviously the most intelligent of the group, although he comes across a bit wonkish.
Bachmann was getting hammered by Pawlenty as well.

I didn't see most of it so I'm not going to opine much more.

After watching the debate again, I realize I mistook Pawlenty for Santorum, although Santorum did get in his share of licks, it was Pawlenty who was wailing on Bachmann.. which makes a lot more sense.

On Newt... Heck, maybe Newt is who we need to be looking at? He could mop the floor with Obama in a debate, and I don't think anyone running has his experience, knowledge, and understanding of the issues as Newt. He has a better grasp on Reaganomics than either of the Bushs. If we went strictly by their resume, Newt would certainly be the front-runner.

Absolutely about Newt. But he's got too much baggage, and he's too smart for his own good sometimes, and is willing to use government to try and solve problems. I'd like to see someone who's more like Reagan, who sees government as the problem.

Here's the deal... Conservatives are all over the board on who they want... what kind of conservative... They know they don't want Obama, but there is a huge gaping difference between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul and Rick Santorum... all of them are bringing the same 'smaller government' message, but have distinctly different conservative viewpoints. Now.... We can't run the collective field of conservatives against Obama. We'll have to pick one. It may or may not be someone either you or I like, it might not be 'our guy' ...or gal... but it will be who the majority nominates to represent the GOP. I will say that anyone who was on that stage last night, I could vote for over Obama. I am interested to see if other conservatives can do the same. And then there is Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, and Rudy Gulliani ... the 'filed' may not be set quite yet. I don't know how the dynamics will play out, momentum seems to mean a lot in the primaries, perhaps someone will 'rise above' during the process? For now, I think it's important to listen to these people with an open mind and understand we may have to find a way to overcome our differences with them, if they win the nomination. Conservatives, I don't care what kind, can ill-afford to allow Obama to be re-elected.

I actually agree with your analysis. I think Romney was the clear winner last night. I would say that the entrance of Perry into the race could relegate Cain down to 4th place. We'll see. Perry has a history of putting his foot in his mouth. I don't get Perry's popularity. He strikes me as an unpricipled person who is telling a constituency just what is wants to hear. He strikes me as an empty suit.

Keep in mind that the issues that give Romney problems with the right wing base make him a very appealing candidate to moderates and independents. Not probably what you want to hear but that makes him very electable in a general election.

That's fine but I'm unwilling to have a moderate or big government Republican be the nominee. The Obama is fucking up worse than Carter, presenting us an opportunity, like at the end of Carter's first term, to elect a true believer, a radical.

Yo if you wants ta beat obama all you gots ta do iz run in 2012 an' you dont gots ta say uh thin` cuz Obama iz worst than Jimmy Carter an' Obama iz compared ta be 'boutas smart as rain nigga Ya' dig?

Okay, but hypothetically speaking... what if the nominee is a moderate Republican? You would rather have 4 more years of Obama? Hey... at this point, if George W. Bush II were up there preaching compassionate conservatism, I think I'd take THAT over Obama! I'm like you, I have my standards and favorites, but I am not so immersed in my own personal ideology, as to sell the country down the river. .....If George W. Bush's DOG won the nomination, I would vote for it over Obama!

Governor Perry has lowered taxes, given Texas a balanced budget, and is a God-Fearing Conservative. What more could you want?

I'll have to say that Bachmann did a good job hitting back without sounding like she was whining. However I really want to know who will best run against Obama, not against each other. I need to hear them speaking more about Obama rather than falling into the traps where they are snarking and taking each other down. Their remarks will be used in the ads that Obama's 527s will run during the campaign.

I happen to like John Huntsman. Was it his politics or his actual debating which caused you to write him off, Dixie? I didn't catch the debate, so now I'm interested...

Mickey Mouse could run against Obama and win.
