"An Inconvenient Truth." Mr. Gore advocates that, since the United States is the largest producer of CO2 and is responsible for 25 percent (or 25 ppm) of these CO2 emissions, we should take the lead in their mitigation. Mr Gore would have us reduce our CO2 emissions by 20 percent (or 5 ppm). This is a really small number.
I realize that much of this ppm stuff is geek-speak. Even I, as a retired engineer, am not completely comfortable with it. So let's try to bring this discussion into something a little more friendly to the non-technical person. We can try money. Think of a million pennies. Then 1 penny would be equal to 1 part per million pennies; 380 pennies would then be equal to 380 ppm. Simple, isn't it? One million pennies is also $10,000. Continuing with the 100 ppm (100 pennies or $1) of CO2 caused by human activity and our responsibility to reduce U.S. emissions by 5ppm (five pennies), we arrive at the conclusion that 5 cents worth of effort on our part is supposed to address this $10,000 "problem." While vanishingly small in the greater scheme of things in the Earth's atmosphere, this reduction in our CO2 emissions will cause a truly disruptive effect on our economy.
This whole CO2-caused-global-warming crisis and the solutions espoused by the environmental alarmists just don't stand the test of logic.
