An unidentified man has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a home invasion on Savannah's east side.
Police are trying to figure out who shot the man, who was one of three assailants who stormed into a home about 1 a.m. in the 2200 block of Hawthorne Street.
The assailants had tried to rob a 22-year-old man standing in the front yard and the man ran into the house.
Police say the assailants followed him. When the man tripped and fell inside the doorway, one of them stood over him, pointing a gun, while another went into the bedroom, pulled a gun on a 23-year-old woman who was laying in bed with her infant son and demanded money.
The child's 28-year-old father, who was in the rear of the house with his brother, heard dogs barking and went for his gun. He ran into the front room and saw a man standing over the 22-year-old, who is his cousin. The father opened fire on the man.
All three assailants fled, and one of them dropped a gun along the way.
The brother picked up the gun and fired a shot, but it is not clear whether he hit one of the fleeing men or whether the father shot the man who police found bleeding, with a disguise beside him, in an empty lot next to the invaded home.
