Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum on Sunday thanked billionaires George Soros and Tom Steyer for helping him score his upset win in last week’s Florida Democratic gubernatorial primary.

“I’ll tell you, I’m obviously deeply appreciative of Mr. Soros, as well as Mr. Steyer, both men whom I’ve known for some time,” Mr. Gillum said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The Democratic megadonors and their associated groups directed millions to the campaign of Mr. Gillum, who edged out former Rep. Gwen Graham in the crowded Democratic primary. He faces Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis in the November election.

At the same time, Mr. Gillum insisted that his gubernatorial campaign was driven by small donations from “everyday folks.”

“[O]ur campaign was really propped up by a lot of small contributions, including my mother, who was on auto-deduct of $20 a month into our campaign,” said Mr. Gillum. “In the first two days of this general election, our campaign has been buoyed this first week, raising over $2 million by everyday folks, not big contributions, but everyday folks sowing a seed into our race.”

Without Mr. Soros and Mr. Steyer, however, it’s fair to ask whether Mr. Gillum would have been able to compete against his better-known, wealthier opponents, including former Miami Beach Mayor Phillip Levine, who spent $29 million of his own money and finished third.

n April, Mr. Gillum’s campaign raised $450,000, more than half of which came from Mr. Soros in the form of a donation to Forward Florida, a pro-Gillum committee, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

In the campaign’s final two weeks, Mr. Soros and Mr. Steyer directed $650,000 to Forward Florida. Mr. Soros chipped in another $250,000 in July, while Mr. Steyer’s NextGen American gave $500,000 between July 30 and Aug. 14, Politico reported.

Mr. Gillum said that “what is going to help us win on Nov. 6 is these everyday folks deciding to sow a seed into this race.”

god help us if this clown gets anywhere near the statehouse. Politically indebted to Soros/Steyer and promising huge government expenditures. We would have to adopt a state income tax,and become NY South

Not all billionaires are republican swine.
Don't you hate that, Anattaboy?

There is nothing in your economic/political system for “everyday folks".

Andrew Gillum Shocked Florida With a Primary Win. But an F.B.I. Inquiry Clouds His Campaign.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Three men with grand redevelopment plans descended on Tallahassee sometime in 2015, eager to schedule work meetings and social gatherings with the most well-connected denizens of City Hall who could help their projects become reality.

One lobbyist in particular drew their attention: Adam Corey, a businessman whose friendship with the mayor dated back to their college days, when both served in student government. Through Mr. Corey, the out-of-town businessmen would eventually get so cozy with local leaders that they partied with a city commissioner in Las Vegas and toured New York Harbor with the Tallahassee mayor.

The businessmen, however, were really undercover F.B.I. agents engaged in a two-year operation to root out corruption in city government. The mayor was Andrew Gillum, a rising star in Democratic politics with his sights set on higher office.

On Tuesday, Mr. Gillum shocked the state’s political establishment and won the Democratic nomination for Florida governor. Now, the federal investigation into the goings-on in Florida’s sleepy capital city has been thrust unexpectedly into the national political spotlight, with questions about how it will affect the most closely watched governor’s race in the country.

“I don’t think anybody expected Mayor Gillum to be the nominee, but now he is, and all of this stuff is going to come under really close scrutiny,” said Ben Wilcox, research director for Integrity Florida, a watchdog group. “And it’s not going to look good for our city.”

Mr. Gillum said he had been told he is not a target in the investigation. The issue received little notice outside of Tallahassee during the primary campaign because Mr. Gillum largely trailed in polls and did not draw attacks from his Democratic opponents. In the few days since securing the nomination, however, Republicans have already made the lingering corruption questions a central issue.

“This guy can’t even run the city of Tallahassee,” Representative Ron DeSantis, his Republican opponent, said this week on Fox News. “There is no way Florida voters can entrust him with our entire state.”

Mr. Gillum has been mayor since 2014, but has held office in the city since 2003, when he became the youngest person ever to win a seat on the Tallahassee City Commission, at 23.

He said he met with F.B.I. investigators in his home last year and was assured that their interest was in other targets. He did not have a lawyer present but was authorized by the agents to describe their conversation, Mr. Gillum said. The F.B.I. and the United States attorney’s office for the Northern District of Florida declined to comment.

From the beginning, Mr. Gillum has insisted that a corruption inquiry in which he said he played no direct role should not be an impediment to his campaign for governor. But he acknowledged that the investigation has rocked city government in Tallahassee since federal authorities delivered their first subpoenas in the case last summer.

honestly it doesn't look like there is a lot there (corruption), but that never stopped Mueller -so we shall see.

What i'm worried about is Medicade expansion - a popular enough idea, but without full single pay the state will be on the hook once the feds stop subsidies.
And then we have to go to a state income tax as well as the high property taxes.

I live a much better quality of life here then I could ever do in a blue state like NY or my home state of Maryland, or states like taxachusettes. no state taxes make a big difference
++

The dude wants teach salaries to START at $5oK, meaning thy wll go up to near 80k for tenured.
Teaching is after all a 9 month of the year job. Districts would have enough money to maintain other services too. average teacher pay is now about $47k - pretty damn good -but this would be starting pay.
++

He also wants to "abolish ICE"and would push for sanctuary cities - a really bad idea since crime is down in FL

A great majority of the public wants DACA passed.

A solid majority wants illegals to be normalized and eventually have a pathway to citizenship.

A majority of the country want Trump and his followers to stop acting mentally ill.

I’ll spare the details.

But if Gilium wants to allude that Desantis is prone to racist slurs, I would absolutely go there if I was Desantis. Put up some poop billboards and say ‘if this is what you want in FL, Gilium is your guy.’

Make him defend that shit lol.

it would backfire. There is plenty to go after that dude.
The problem is emotional voters who want to hear "racism" instead of his bankrupting socialist policies
