Ghislaine Maxwell's US jail conditions 'are torture' - brother

The way British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is being treated in a New York jail is "degrading" and "amounts to torture", her brother has told the BBC.

Ian Maxwell said she was being held under constant surveillance in a 6x9ft (1.8x2.7m) cell with no natural light, and the food was "basically inedible".

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday, Mr Maxwell said his sister had now been "in effective isolation" in the prison for nearly 250 days.

He said her cell had only a concrete bed and a toilet.

"There is no natural light, she is under 24-hour round-the-clock surveillance with 10 cameras, including one that moves and tracks her movements," Mr Maxwell said.

The water she was being given was "brown", he said, adding that the food was "highly microwaveable... and basically inedible".

He said she had not been able to prepare adequately for her trial because of the detention conditions.

Mr Maxwell said he believed she was losing her hair, having trouble with her eyesight and her ability to concentrate.

But he said she remained "resolute" and denied suggestions that she was a suicide risk.

Mr Maxwell also said that the identities of his sister's three accusers had not been revealed with only four months before the start of the trial.

(bows to your thread-ban list)

Well, it's hard to feel terribly sorry for her. I do wonder why #TRE45ON didn't pardon her though.

How can she say that she doesn't know who her accusers are????????????

I think that torture is inexcusable, let alone for those that haven't been proven guilty of any crime. Torture takes many forms, of course, from health deprivation through water-boarding and far worse. Those guilty of the Abu Ghraib atrocities wondered what all the fuss was about. There's something inherently wrong with American perceptions of justice- which, of course, is the underlying topic as we can't discuss Maxwell until her trial is concluded.
Yes, El Trumpo missed a trick there. Despite what appears to be efforts to silence/browbeat her in jail, Maxwell's testimony could be explosive.

I agree. Given her high profile as a celebrity, I'm puzzled as to why -- if the conditions are that poor -- that her attorneys aren't making noise about it.

It's standard procedure in American jails/prisons to keep those who are accused of sexual crimes to be kept isolated like this for their own safety. No doubt they're also concerned about a repeat of the Epstein death.

I wonder if she can shed light on Trump's involvement with under aged girls???????????????

US prisons can be torture true

As an aside without relevance to Ms. Maxwell and her situation, conditions in US prisons are indeed deplorable.
Such is the case in all socially regressive nations.
PoliTalker loves the USA in its current configuration and can thus be assumed to be OK with this.

Hello Iolo/Penderyn,

Is that the plan for all prisoners?

Well, it all depends on which jail one ends up in, and for what crime.

White collar criminals have it more like European prisons.

But violent and sex offenders face stark conditions.

And we have so many jurisdictions. There is great inequity in the various zones.

It has long been known that most American prisoners are black. This arises out of our guilt and self-denial over having maintained slavery for so long.

It seems we have modeled many of our prisons after olde English dungeons.

Give us a few hundred more years. We're such a young country, comparatively.

We've yet to learn many of the lessons of Europe.

But then, you've had so much longer to figure these things out.

This is the sort of reporting that undermines the judicial system and the premise of ' innocent until proven guilty '

Ms Allred is representing a number of women who are accusing Ghislaine Maxwell of grooming young girls for Jeffrey Epstein.

"I know Miss Maxwell is probably suffering in jail, nobody likes being in jail, nobody likes having their freedom restricted, but I really think bail should be out of the question, it would be very upsetting to the victims," she said on the Today programme.

How can there be ' victims ' of Maxwell when she is presumed innocent ?
By extrapolation , why does the US penal system allegedly torture innocent people ?

Surely, innocent people should be kept in completely different conditions to the guilty- and even the guilty should not be kept in conditions considered to be inhumane.
