Germany considers getting its own nuclear weapons despite rejecting nuclear energy

Germans are beginning to discuss whether the country will eventually need its own nuclear weapons amid fears of U.S. disengagement with Europe, even as Germany continues to spurn nuclear power.

German officials have begun discussing a nuclear fallback plan with the U.K. and France, thanks in large part to Russia's continued aggression as well as former President Trump's pressure on European allies to meet defense spending thresholds, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner gave voice to concerns in an article published in German media.

"Under which political and financial conditions would Paris and London be willing to maintain and expand their own strategic capacities for our collective security? And conversely, how much are we ready to contribute?" Lindner asked....

Germany has started two world wars costing tens of millions of lives. Should Germany ever have nuclear weapons?

That's a damn good idea on Germany's part if Trump is president again,, the U.S. will no longer be leader of the free world or a reliable ally and more than likely gets out of NATO too?!! They will need nukes to deal with an unstable Putin/Russia too?!!

I don't like to see a remilitarized Germany, but Trump has insinuated he won't defend NATO countries, and has telegraphed intentions to withdraw from NATO. So you can't blame Germany for feeling America's nuclear umbrella defense might be unreliable.

Thanks Trump.

Well, nuclear weapons are cheaper than a 'real' military with things like soldiers, tanks, and airplanes, and when you are Left of Center nation with a high cost social welfare state and lots of grotesquely expensive green energy shit going on, nukes are a great deal...

We shouldn't be defending NATO countries alone. They should be able to defend themselves first and our help will ensure they win. Not we're going to defend them for them, like most of NATO is doing now.

Maybe Germany should invest in their NATO obligation instead.

Not our job to defend other nations...remember Nam? And Korea?

You really should read the NATO treaty, Sock.

I assume than Germany is protected by NATO nuclear armament, but it they wish to have their own nuclear weapons,
I fully support it.

The United States is in freefall, and cannot be depended on for anything anymore.
We're not supporting Ukraine as we should, nor even Israel,
and there's no counting on us to support our NATO allies either.

Your OP complained about Germany seeking nuclear weapons, and the fact is that is largely the fault of the guy you voted for.

No American president has ever made Western Europe feel we can't be counted on to provide them nuclear deterrence. Until Trump.

Nuclear proliferation is not a desirable thing, and if it happens in Europe, you can look at your voting record as the cause.

I know. If we were anything approaching a civilized country, the poor guy would be mercifully put down.

That's the truth. I imagine that Into the Night's caretakers hand him an iPad for a few hours a day so they can go deal with other patients. He spends that time exhibiting his psychoses to the internet. He should be humanely extinguished.
