georgia tries to close 7 in 9 black voting locations

While prior approval is no longer needed those who think changes will adversely affect voters can still bring suit against those state actions and several have done so successfully in challenging voter ID laws. I think that is a more useful remedy than the Trump Justice Department.

You know what though? People should not have to pay money to lawyers to bring suit in order to vote, or to help others vote. WTF. We are all American citizens and are born with that right. Why should *anyone* have to get an atty in order to exercise that right?

If we're going to be taking shit to the SCt all the time, let it be gun-humpers' whining about their right to own human-mowing machines-of-death. Not voters.

Additionally, the right engages in voter fraud and suppression .. long ass historical list covering decades of republican voter suppression. You're arguing with history.

I don't disagree. I also know Democrats have a long history of attempting to change election outcomes. To suggest one party is worse than the other also ignores history.

When Democrats controlled my state some counties did not even have a Republican primary and in my county there was one location for the Republican primary and 28 for Democrats. The party in power makes the rules to benefit itself. Any objective observation knows both parties are equally guilty of such tactics.

But it is ok to let the Trump Justice Department make those decisions? The courts can make a more fair decision than the political branch. Those suits are not brought by individuals but many different groups that exist for that purpose.

The prior approval was also costly and unnecessarily burdensome. A small isolated neighborhood in my state had to get DOJ approval to move the voting location from one person's garage to a different garage.

Americans were born with the right to vote? Where can I find that right?

Now that is funny! You have any more jokes? Lol!

Elections board takes less than a minute to reject proposal to close 7 of 9 polling places in majority-black county

(CNN)In a meeting that lasted less than 60 seconds, a Georgia board of elections voted down a plan Friday to close seven of a majority-black county's nine polling places ahead of November's midterm elections.

Critics had said the plan to consolidate polling places in Randolph County, Georgia, was a brazen attempt to suppress the black vote in Georgia's governor race, which pits former Georgia House minority leader Stacey Abrams, who is black, against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who is white.

The vote came amid widespread national criticism and days after the county terminated its contract with Mike Malone, the consultant who made the recommendation. Malone had argued that closing the polling stations would save the county money, and that some of the sites suggested for closure did not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Awesome news.

This illustrates the power of the press. No wonder Trump and the Trumpanzees fear it so very much.

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

Yes. I'm sure we all remember the horrible weeks a few years ago in Ferguson, MO. At that time the population was majority black, but there were no elected black officials in city council. The black voter turn-out was poor, as well. Why's that? You may also recall the DOJ investigations into Ferguson's policing and ticketing policies prior to the murder of Michael Brown. The city gained a good share of its operating revenue from traffic citations. Plus there was a huge backlog of unpaid citations and ppl with warrants. In Missouri, you have to show your drivers license to register to vote, along with a bill or something showing current address. Many ppl did not want to register to vote because they were afraid of being arrested on outstanding warrants.

Fortunately that situation has changed. There are now two black members of the council, one of whom just ran against long-time county prosecutor Bob McCullough in the primary, and defeated him. The times, they are a-changing.

Now THAT's good news!

Thanks!

Not as effectively as political pressure:

So much for Democrats caring about the handicapped.

So much for Democrats caring about the handicapped.

You have no idea how much fun I could have slapping that ignorance down with facts and history.

But then again, facts and history aren't really your forte' .. are they? So why use history when the truth of the present is so obvious?

"closing the polling stations would save the county money, and that some of the sites suggested for closure did not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

You think they couldn't find a workaround for those some? What do you think they're doing now?

a) I do not have the details.

b) The sketchy, corroborating reports I've reviewed of it suggest this topic headline addresses an intention to benefit the Republican party by shutting down most of the voting locations which might be expected to vote disproportionately Democrat.

I resolutely support robust political competition. If the Democrats have a plan, but the Republicans think they have a better plan, let each party present their plan; and let the electorate decide.

But when any party resorts to voter suppression it is tantamount to a confession that political party lacks confidence that it can compete legitimately and win. Thus:
georgia tries to close 7 in 9 black voting locations
In the 1960's the Republican party was something to be proud of. Back then the GOP stood for solid principles, such as fiscal conservatism.

1) In the new millennium, no Republican president has gained the White House by winning the vote. The People clearly do not want what the Republican party has to offer.

2) Candidate turned Republican party presidential nominee Trump campaigned on MAGA & "drain the swamp". This week, by conviction and confession, it has been made vividly clear: Trump IS the swamp.
“The president's closest legal political and one of his closest business associates testified under oath that the president of the United States directed him to violate campaign finance law and reporting law, for the purposes of preventing knowledge of his affair with a porn star from coming out two weeks before the election.
Now let's stipulate that Michael Cohen is a sleaze-bag. So we hope it has corroborating evidence that will support this claim. But if that claim is true this is of historic outrageous significance.
If you look at the Constitutional convention this is exactly the kind of crime that the impeachment proceeding was meant to respond to. Donald Trump cheated his way into the presidency by denying the public knowledge of his affair with a porn star & a Playboy bunny, two weeks before the election by funneling money to them through a corrupt criminal scheme. What could be sort of more obviously disqualifying than that? And yet, the senate is about to confirm the supreme court nominee by that illegitimate president, who will then sit in judgment of whether they can subpoena him.
This is of historic, unprecedented corruption ...”
“... But if you look at what is happening in the senate with people like Lindsey Graham & John Cornyn saying that Trump can now fire [U.S. Attorney General Jeff] Sessions after the [November 2018 mid-term] election, the Republicans in the United States senate & in congress including John Catco ...
they are now all complicit in a criminal scheme to elect a president illegitimately.” professor Tim Byrnes, Colgate University 18/08/24

“I do have to correct you when you say that he cheated his way into the presidency. That is not provable. He may have attempted to cheat his way ...” professor Lisa Dolak, Syracuse University

“But attempting to cheat is a crime. We will never know because we don't have a parallel universe. But since he committed the crime for the purposes of trying to cheat, he's then guilty.” professor Tim Byrnes, Colgate University 18/08/24

“Yeah. So what does this actually mean in real life?
What it means is that obviously impeachment is going to depend on the composition of the congress.
I don't believe that the president will be indicted. Certainly not for this crime.” professor Lisa Dolak, Syracuse University
