Georgia Congressman questions Patriot Act signature

Republican Rep. Tom Graves of Georgia sent President Obama a letter today questioning the constitutionality of the president's use of a device called an autopen to sign into law an extension of the Patriot Act.​

In an additional statement explaining the letter, Graves said the use of the autopen could set a "dangerous precedent."​

What a complete idiot. Guess he didn't know his messiah bush already handled this controversy.

"...Tom Graves of Georgia is questioning, today, whether President Obama's autopen signature on the Patriot Act extension is constitutionally sound. But in 2005, President George W. Bush's Office of Legal Counsel considered the question and issued a decision, written by Howard Nielson.

It's 29 pages long, but it essentially says, what matters is the president's decision to approve a bill, not the mechanics of how it's signed. After all, says Nielson, the Constitution also says if the president is going to veto a bill, quote, "he shall return it."

That doesn't matter.


Here's the Republican strategy: if Obama did it, it's wrong. Everything he does is wrong.



If he didn't do it, he should have.



So, obviously, it would've been OK for Bush to use the autopen, just not Obama.


Of course it's also OK that Thomas Jefferson built one for his own use, which can be seen today at Monticello.



In 1804, Thomas Jefferson began using the device extensively….

Yes. If Obama hasn't done it he should have, and if he has done it, it is probably the same thing Bush would have done.
