On matters of culture and ethnicity, the French tend to be narcissistic, xeonophobic, and nationalistic. Does this surprise you? Muslims are pretty much discriminated against, and tend to live in ghettos there.

Luckily, this is America. And luckily, we have a bill of rights and a modest tradition of tolerance. Which is why the ground zero mosque Manhattan community center haters remind me a lot of the French.

Narcissistic, yes. Xenophobic, Yes. Nationalistic, Yes. But, once again, in that particular department America wins hands down.
When your country is faced with the same problems I am sure you will change your views. This is not about Muslims or Islam or freedom of worship, this is about identitification, order and culture.
Parts of the UK banned what they call 'hoodies' from shopping centres for the same reason and, believe me, few if any hoodies have any faith save that that exists on a Friday night booze up.
You have managed to hide your tradition of tolerance extremely well.

I'm the first mother effer on this board to bash american NeoCon hegemony, and I was a bush hater way, way, way before it was cool, and years before even republicans started pretending they didn't like shrub.

Muslims assimilate quite well here, as do all other immigrant groups, and muslims aren't as marginalized here as in europe. I'm quite sure our muslim population is about the same magnitude percentage wise, as UK or France. And no worries here, because assimilation is quite natural here. We have never had immigrant groups that didn't assimilate by the second or third generation. Although admittedly, our history of racism and slavery did segregate black americans for 400 years.

And I live in california bro. I'm already practically a minority here. I don't even think anglo-whites are a majority here anymore. And you know what? For the most part we all get along - at least compared to other ethnically diverse places on the planet. I actually have no fear of muslims destroying law and order here. I don't have the demographic data, but I suspect that american-muslims are higher-educated and more professional than the statistically average american. Why? Again, because immigrants and religious groups assimilate here. Muslim-americans, IMO, are a highly valued demographic of our country - and probably the most peaceful and docile demographic we have. I get it why its different in some Europe countries, man. And if you need to pass laws against muslims, that's up to you.

No hostility in this post, simply pointing out that the issue of Burka banning is not neccessarity connected with Muslims but about crime prevention and identity. Hoodies, if you were confused, are/were simply yobs who entered shopping malls often with the intention of misbehaving. Because they could not be identified sufficiently well to be identified in court they tended to laugh in the face of justice.
So, we banned local kids before Sarkosi or anyone else thought of banning burkas. Our then Home Sec also refused to accept delegations of burka'd women claiming for all sorts of benefits (that you dont have) because there was no way to ensure they were not claiming twice.
This is simply a matter of Laura Norder not religious persecution.
Now, it IS possible that an element of religious persecution is riding on Laura's shirt tails but that will always happen.

If you need to do some banning-crap to keep law and order from the imminent threat of muslims, that's up to you.

I'm not at all frightened of american muslims, american jews, or american hindus, nor do I consider any of them a threat in any plausible way. For the most part, I consider them a valued asset to our nation. So I can't really hang with statutory bans on religious traditions, nor would it pass constitutional muster here.

But, good luck with the UK muslim thingy!

The French are the worse. My aunt is really progressive and her husband is as well along with being Canadian and I hear them rip on the French. I'm not sure if what they say is so funny (though I think it is) or I'm just shocked to hear them do it because it was so unexpected (at least to me) but I always die laughing when they do.

Thomas, you can post some random story about an honor killing from Turkey, or whatever, but its not going to make me frightened of american muslims.

Honor killings are cultural, not religious. You don't see, in any measurable way, Bosnian muslims or American muslims doing honor killings.

Every day of the week in America, some woman is killed by some jealous ex-boyfriend or some control-freak husband. Control of women and violence against women is a far larger problem, than some psychotic Turkish male idiot. Wasn't there some lonely, psychotic rightwinger a couple months ago who walked into a gym in michigan and gunned down some women because he couldn't get a date?


Feel free to cherry pick some story from the other side of the planet about an honor killing, if you need to validate your feelings about UK muslims. But please stop begging me to accept it as a plausible reason to be afraid of american muslims.
