Freedom of Speach, the PINHEAD version.

Actually, NPR isn't a state actor for purposes of the First Amendment and Juan Williams had no case whatsoever.

National Public Radio, funded by the US Federal Government, is NOT a "state actor?" REALLY? You don't think so? I beg to differ, and if they aren't, I want every cent of federal funding withdrawn immediately!

National Public Radio, Inc. is a private 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation. Yes, it does receive a modest amount of federal funds through grants and/or through its member stations which receive funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, but just as, say, private colleges are not state actors because they receive some federal funding, so too with NPR.

Look it up if you like.

There have been tons of cases, mostly from college professors trying to get their jobs back claiming that their state run university was violating their 1st amendment rights. Most of those have been losers as well.

well, it isn't. Juan williams is an idiot, but nothing you correlated to it is relevant to him being fired by NPR.

I didn't say the fact that Williams is an idiot is relevant to him being fired. Forgive me for talking about his comments generally as opposed to in the context of his termination.

In any event, he was fired for repeatedly violating NPR's standards.

I was listening on the radio about this just 30 minutes ago. NPR said that he was dismissed for violating the editorial board policy. anyone have this policy to post?

Thanks Nigel, now which part of that policy did he violate? did he not ask for permission to be on the spin me round round baby right round show?

"At NPR we are expected to conduct ourselves in a manner that leaves no question about our independence and fairness. We must treat the people we cover and our audience with respect."

His comments re: Muslims weren't very respectful.

granted, I didn't watch the piece he made his statement, but I would assume it was just his own personal opinion, right? he wasn't covering a story, he was giving an interview, or is this wrong?

I believe this is the portion:

In appearing on TV or other media including electronic Web-based forums, NPR journalists should not express views they would not air in their role as an NPR journalist. They should not participate in shows electronic forums, or blogs that encourage punditry and speculation rather than fact-based analysis.

NPR has no fuckin' (neutral) standards, you ass.....the continued employment of Bill Moyers for years is absolute proof of that......they have an agenda....a one-sided agenda......far-left......

seems to me he'd have a case as good as any non compete agreement clause.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. As a journalist, he shouldn't be offering his opinion as to whether Bill O is right to fear Muslims and he shouldn't be offering his own irrational fears of people wearing Muslim garb in airports.

It wasn't an opinion and had nothing to do with O'Reilly's views on anything....It was a heart felt admission of his personal feelings .......

Could you maybe articulate the distinction that you make between an opinion about something (say, people dressed in Muslim garb) versus a feeling about it? I don't see very much daylight between the two.

And this is how he started out his comments:

"Well, actually, I hate to say this to you because I don't want to get your ego going. But I think you're right. I think, look, political correctness can lead to some kind of paralysis where you don't address reality."

So, yes, it did indeed have a little bit to do with Bill's view on things.

Bill Moyers has a television program on PBS. As far as I know, he is not employed by NPR.

"But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they're identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Juan Williams is a pants-shitter. Aside from the bigotry, which isn't really all that surprising, what strikes me is how fucking stupid his comment is. I mean, near as I recollect, none of the 9/11 hijackers nor the Shoe Bomber nor the Boxersorbriefs Bomber were "clad in Muslim garb."

How is it bigoted? Did he indicate that he had rationalized his fear or that it justified any act against them?

Air travel is stressful and it's not some great sin to get nervous at images our culture largely associates with terrorism during a period of stress.

Williams replied that he was actually disagreeing with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and trying to say that despite feeling nervous when seeing Muslims at the airport, Americans have an “obligation to be careful to protect the constitutional rights of everyone in the country and to make sure we don’t have any outbreak of bigotry.”

Hey, I am happy as a clam about this. I think the overwhelming majority of mainstream America is applauded by it, and that includes a LOT of independent voters and moderate democrats who really like Juan. Whether you tards want to admit it or not, NPR is viewed as "government" radio, and this will only hurt the current party in power, in my opinion.

Run take a gander at Obama's approval ratings, notice when they started to swap places with his disapproval ratings... it was just after the Agriculture Department (government) threw one of their own (Shirley Sherrod) under the bus. People don't like this kind of stuff from their government, it tends to piss them off. Then they see little left wing socialist fuckwits like you guys, here defending NPR, and it make them sick to their stomachs. I say we make popcorn, watch Juan dangle in the breeze, and see how much further Democrats drop in approval the next week or so.

I bet all of the people squealing like scalded cats over this were very upset when Helen Thomas was fired too. I mean, you have to at least give them that.

Right?
Are you kidding, you're kidding, right, Darla you are a pop eyed optimist!
