Vice President Joe Biden appeared at the opening of one of its plants. CEO Kevin Surace thanked him for his "unwavering support." "Without you and the recovery ("stimulus") act, this would not have been possible," Surace said.

Biden returned the compliment: "You are not just churning out windows; you are making some of the most energy-efficient windows in the world. I would argue the most energy-efficient windows in the world."

Gee, other window-makers say their windows are just as energy efficient, but the vice president didn't visit them.

Hmmm....

Biden laid it on pretty thick for Serious Materials: "This is a story of how a new economy predicated on innovation and efficiency is not only helping us today but inspiring a better tomorrow."

Well now... Biden seems to really like this company... I wonder why... but wait... there's more....

Serious doesn't just have the vice president in his corner. It's got President Obama himself.

Company board member Paul Holland had the rare of honor of introducing Obama at a "green energy" event. Obama then said: "Serious Materials just reopened ... a manufacturing plant outside of Pittsburgh. These workers will now have a new mission: producing some of the most energy-efficient windows in the world."

Wow... both the VP AND the President pumping this company... whatever could be the reason???

When the CEO said that opening his factory wouldn't have been possible without the Obama administration, he may have known something we didn't. Last month, Obama announced a new set of tax credits for so-called green companies. One window company was on the list: Serious Materials. This must be one very special company.

this must indeed be a phenomenal company to get such praise and support. Wait!!! we are not done... if you act now... there is more...

On my Fox Business Network show on "crony capitalism", I displayed a picture of administration officials and so-called "energy leaders" taken at the U.S. Department of Energy. Standing front and center was Cathy Zoi, who oversees $16.8 billion in stimulus funds, much of it for weatherization programs that benefit Serious.

The interesting twist is that Zoi happens to be the wife of Robin Roy, who happens to be vice president of "policy" at Serious Windows.

well now... THAT would explain the praise, the growth and the funding being received now wouldn't it?

Of all the window companies in America, maybe it's a coincidence that the one which gets presidential and vice presidential attention and a special tax credit is one whose company executives give thousands of dollars to the Obama campaign and where the policy officer spends nights at home with the Energy Department's weatherization boss.

Nothing to see here.... move along... this is just normal routine business... pure coincidence.... keep moving... All is well....

There may be nothing illegal about this. Zoi did disclose her marriage and said she would recuse herself from any matter that had a predictable effect on her financial interests.

But it sure looks funny to me, and it's odd that the liberal media have so much interest in this one company. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, usually not a big promoter of corporate growth, gushed about how Serious Materials is an example of how the "stimulus" is working.

yeah... something is starting to smell a bit...

When we asked the company about all this, a spokeswoman said, "We don't comment on the personal lives of our employees." Later she called to say that my story is "full of lies."

But she wouldn't say what those lies are.

I am sure this will be all over the blogs and main stream media... especially causing an uproar over all those corrupt government screamers over the past 8 years....

On its website, Serious Materials says it did not get a taxpayer subsidy. But that's just playing with terms. What it got was a tax credit, an opportunity that its competitors did not get: to keep money it would have paid in taxes. Let's not be misled. Government is as manipulative with selective tax credits as it is with cash subsidies. It would be more efficient to cut taxes across the board. Why should there be favoritism?

Just for you Desh... I knew you would like this story....

Because politicians like it. Big, complicated government gives them opportunities to do favors for their friends.

Good to see the Dems proudly carrying on where the Reps left off.

THIS is the kind of shit little spy boy OKeefe should have been investigating.

I agree it looks pretty slimey.

Oh super this may explain why they are all kinda in the window companies camp.

It seems this window factory was the one that the employees all stayed and protested the closing of their company and the Owner bailing on them without paying them. This guy roy bought it out and made it an energy efficient plant and saved all these peoples jobs.

Nice try but I think maybe you jumped the gun.

in other words the widows can't stand on their own they aren't commercial without the subsidy. LOL

But these days construction is getting an inordinate amount of TLC from a venture capital community that sees an enormous opportunity. Heating and cooling buildings consumes 39% of the total U.S. energy use, including 70% of the nation's power plant electricity, according to a recent report by the venture capital firm Nth Power (here's our Q&A with Nancy Floyd of Nth Power) and the Frauenhofer Institute in Germany. Yet 34% of this energy is lost through leaky walls, windows and doors that allow heat to escape outside. Say "building envelope" to California venture capitalists, and they get weak in the knees.

ulike you I have spent 25 years in business in high finance.

Thriving businesses don't get subsidies, ones gov wants to help promote do.

I'm for it.

though I think investing in large smart grid and wind farms would be better than windows and weather stripping even though those alone are good.

Windows are something every can do, They understand it and it saves REAL money and energy.

Its my husbands industry top and Green IS the way to go.

The computor industry was also nursed along by gov.

Houses built in the last decade or two don't need it. That money would be better spent on smart grid, we lose about 50% of electricity in the dumb lines. Wind farms and other large invesment in green are better than a shit load of tiny no future impact that people could do themselves if it were really value added. Little joe can't build a wind farm or smart grid. He can already get a energy efficient window if it makes financial sense.
I've made thousand investing in green, I know more than most about the green industry.

that is a bullshit excuse desh.... I don't care that he bought it out or not... there are a lot of people out there losing jobs... there are a lot of businesses going under. This guy got a sweet heart deal from his WIFE and got plugs from both Biden and Obama.

There are plenty of other energy efficient window makers.... what about their employees and their businesses? By subsidizing THIS one, that gives them an advantage over their peers.

Did they submit applications and were denied?

cause political payoffs started with Obama. LOL

I just think there is far better green investing, maybe smart grid and windfarm Joe didn't donate as much as Window Joe!!!

ahh... the king of apologists has arrived...

how grand...

Please... go right to the front your majesty... pucker up and kiss Obama's ass some more... create excuses... it is all you are good for....

It was a fairly simple question and it has everything to do with the assertion that the tax credit (representing about 2.5% of 2.4 billion awarded to about 180 companies) was awarded to give this particular company a competitive advantage as opposed to being the result of a legitimate process.

I'm not really apologizing for anything, I'm just not taking John Stossel's word for anything.

I do apologize... I forgot your other standby of attacking the author rather than the content. Quite silly of me actually.

I'm attacking what Stossel isn't telling you, not Stossel himself. Specifically, that $2.4 billion in tax credits were granted to about 180 companies and the IRS, not the DOE, ultimately awarded the tax credits. Zoi was not in charge of the program as the IRS ultimately awarded the funds.

This one company among the 180 or so that were awarded tax credits received about 2.5% of the total awards. Stossel himself acknowledges that he has no idea whatsoever whether this award was the product of a corrupt process but that doesn't stop him from suggesting that this was some sort of crony deal.

And if the charge is that this manufacturer got some sort of competitive advantage over others, at least make a showing that its competitors qualified under the program but were denied.

Bullshit, windows and doors are the main place that houses lose energy from.

There are vast numbers of houses over ten years old anyway, This is my hubby business toppy. There is a DEMAND for this product. You just dont realize that the new home sellers are advertising that their homes have these products in them as a selling point.
