Why did those civil planners decide to move people out of their own neighborhoods in most major metropolitan areas and into high rises in the 50s and early 60s. I bet you don't have a damn clue, do you? You might start by reading a book by Robert Caro about Robert Moses called The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York (1989); and if you find that tome too daunting, which you may, you can read Marshall Berman's All That Is Solid Melts Into Air: The Experience of Modernity (1982). Moses designed the model of urban removal used by nearly all major metropolitan areas to accomplish a specific task as cheaply as possible. A task that you know nothing about and your ignorance obviates by its false simplicity and erroneous cause and effect.

What difference does it make where this person graduated from? That is irrelevant. He and you never do define "race." But that is only one of several confusions here. The point is the ideas expressed here are too confused to be taken too seriously. I don't know how you can call this Black Nationalism since he disavows race up front. But immediately after doing so he begins talking about "reconnect[ing], or creat[ing] a base here." But the problem of diminishing returns he is addressing seems to me to be much more universal from what I have seen and certainly not limited to any ethnicity or other specific group of people. It is a problem inherent in the structural contradictions that are a basic aspect of postmodern finance capitalism. Yet he plans to combat this problem of capitalism with more capitalism in a market restricted by something other than "race" and by doing so within this fragmented market he expects to transcend the problems generated by global capitalism and from which it suffers. His analysis is utterly confused, and his solution seems largely unworkable; if it isn't based on "race" it can't really be "Black Nationalism" unless he is talking about some kind of "strategic essentialism" ala Gayatri Spivak, but he mentions nothing about that so it is hard to say what he is actually thinking of or referring to, but as written and certainly as presented here it is too confused and too ill conceived to be of much use one way or the other.

You can't fix capitalism and you can't improve your life chances by at this point restricting your market in this way. So where he graduated from isn't relevant and what he is saying isn't generally all that relevant either. The only think that evidently makes it noteworthy at all is that it is a Black man writing about Black Nationalism and the question that follows from this is would it be more or less noteworthy than having anyone else, say a white college professor like Alexander Sexton or Ross Posnock or Walter Benn Michaels, or David Roediger, or George Lipsitz or an Indian like Ms. Spivak, writing about it. They certainly have much more knowledge of such things than this person, having having written about and studied this issue for decades. So what talent does he bring to this discussion, and what specific written work has he contributed to the broader study of racism/nationalism/ essentialism or cultural constructions of "race"? In other words, what is it, other than his own Blackness, that qualifies him to discuss Black Nationalism? And doesn't that qualification then put him and you into the same bind that he is trying to get out of by claiming "race is a farce" further is that is the case, and all the people I mention make that same point, then on what basis is he and you basing a claim for Black Nationalism? How would he know who the Black people were if he didn't recognize their race?

I think the Celine of Detroit is use to both state and federl policies, so it was both Democrats and Republican policies that has lead to its ruin.

NAFTA certainly had a huge impact on the city.

There is a great deal of corruption and poverty. The state did nothing to help the city. The Feds turned their backs.

You compare Pittsburgh and Detroit and see where Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania responded differently to the changes.

My colleagues and I at the Center for Retirement Research are beginning a project to figure out why some localities are facing serious financial problems. Instead of reviewing the finances of the 2,400 cities and towns in the U.S. Census of Governments, we decided to search newspapers, magazines, wire services and other sources for cities or towns that have been cited in the press as financially troubled. Our search turned up 41 localities. Nine of those were tiny towns that had lost a major lawsuit. The other 32 localities had more pervasive problems, and included the expected larger suspects such as Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Providence, R.I. Others were small, like Prichard, Ala., and Central Falls, R.I. What I found astounding was that 10 of the 32 financially troubled cities were in California. I guess the bright side is that, excluding California, American cities are not about to topple over like dominoes. On the other hand, what is going on in California?

According to the Economist, California’s underlying problems rest with its brand of democracy. Essentially, Californians have adopted a direct and participatory democracy rather than the representative democracy favored by James Madison and other founders. The California approach opened the way for a major role for voter initiatives. These initiatives were used sparingly for much of the 20th century, but then in 1978, Californians passed Proposition 13. It was an anti-tax measure but had vast implications both for taxes and the power of the legislature to respond to economic shocks, such as the financial crisis and Great Recession.
