A Florida teacher told her fourth grade student to pledge allegiance to the flag...or else.

Hernando County school teacher Anne Daigle-McDonald has been suspended without pay after grabbing a student’s wrist, placing it over his heart, and forcing him to recite the Pledge.

The boy, a Jehovah’s Witness, reminded the teacher that his religion doesn’t allow him to worship objects. He stood up out of respect for his country, but he didn’t want to put his hand over his heart.

"You are an American, and you are supposed to salute the flag," Daigle-McDonald reportedly said, according to a statement the boy gave the Explorer K-8 school.

The first incident happened on Sept. 11, the 12-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The next day, Daigle-McDonald noticed that the boy hadn’t changed his habits. That’s when she decided to turn the incident into a lesson for all her young students.

She yanked the boy’s hand over his heart and then told the entire class, “In my classroom, everyone will do the pledge; no religion says that you can't do the pledge."

She continued, "If you don't want to say the pledge, you still have to put your hand on your heart and if you don't want to do that, you should move out of the country.”

It's funny how people often do things that are in direct contradiction with true American ideals under the guise of preserving or honoring American ideals....

I guess that school district is going to have an opening, really soon.

For all of the students who aren't JW or Calvinist, etc (typically MS/JH and above):

I pledge distain to America's Flag, which I shall surely burn;
And to the Republic, for which it stands - we need Mao right now!
One nation, fuck that, divided into prison camps
With equal division of labor and injustice for all.

The student had no reason to even stand, if that were his/her decision. I think they should, as the child did, but not required. The teacher went beyond the pale.

I do not believe anyone should be forced to pledge to a flag that doesn't wish to. I firmly believe that anyone has the right to burn the flag, if it's their property to make some point. If the later is an adult, they need to be aware of the reactions possible within their community.

A child in school? They should be left to be without comment.

Personally, I have no problem with flag or pledge. I haven't a problem with showing patriotism, not nationalism. I want to celebrate our history, the sacrifices of multitudes, I respect their memories. If others don't? I think we'll survive without their support.

Hey just because you want to elevate nationalism to the level of a mental illness doesn't mean everyone wants too.

This is exactly what I mean about conservatives. They're real good talking about freedom and liberty but this is how they typically respond when someone actually practices them.

Agreed. People who think others should be coerced into public demonstration of devotion to our nation are morons.

I don't believe that, Mott. I also recognize that given the freedom to choose, we can witness who all the traitors are (well, mostly just the lazy fucks...).

glad to see you seem to be recovering from your bout of insane hate for anyone that didn't bow to Bush during the Bush years.

when exactly did this happen to you?

What complete and utter nonsense. You don't have to participate in some formal ritual to demonstrate your patriotism or love for you nation. If you don't want to participate in a ritual...fine....it's your right. It's what it means to be an American.
