Florida book bans - the first step before burning

Yes, indeed. Much easier to spasm out about quotes and some deranged old bimbo pretending to a career she didn't have, than to address the fact that FL is making moves to restrict access to unapproved-by-the-government books.

It is such a brutal law too. It makes it possible for teachers to go to prison for the most boring books imaginable. I have to think the intent is to scare teachers so they do nothing.

Given the timing, and the differences in grade, I assumed it had to be Federal.

I really don't know. It was just offered as part of mandatory PE class, but parental approval was part of it. As I recall, only a couple of girls opted out due to parental disapproval. Ironically, one of them later got pregnant and had to leave school. I wonder how many parents today would give approval? That was and is an affluent area and largely conservative.

Unless it's Mein Kampf or something by Ayn Rand, of course. lol

I liked Seth Meyer's joke about Pompeo's book the other night - its subtitle is, "50% off"!

Cracks me up these MAGA enablers like Bolton, Barr, and Pompeo now think they have a chance to be president.

Oh, and Nikki Haley - I don't know if she has a book out but she's trying to whitewash her past twump enabling as well.

1A only matters to MAGAs when they're spewing racist hate or election lies.

Of course it is. As if educators don't have enough to deal with now. They're supposed to teach and ensure that kids pass state-mandated tests. Their own career depends upon how well the kids do on those tests.

They're supposed to be aware of and curbing bullying.

They're supposed to be alert for signs of abuse/neglect and act on any suspicions.

They're supposed to keep parents in the loop at all times, even those parents who would prefer to tighten the loop around their necks.

They have to tiptoe the line between offending parents and offending administration.

They have to watch for signs that a child is struggling with depression and/or suicidal thoughts.

They are supposed to present engaging and educational material, often bought at their own expense.

They spend hours every day outside the classroom grading and prepping lesson plans. They spend evenings in parent-teacher conferences.

And now they have to be aware of Book Nazis.

How horribly true *that* is.

And when you contradict the lies, you're a target for revenge. Remember how Cheney attacked the CIA agent because her husband dared to contradict the "Iraq has nukes" propaganda? Scooter Libby went to jail for it. Twump fired Comey for refusing to back off on investigating Flynn, Jeff Sessions career was ruined, because although he was the first Senator to endorse twump, Sessions made the mistake of doing his job by recusing himself from the Russia investigation.

You can't do the right thing if you're a Republican these days. You have to join the cult or be destroyed.

In inverse proportion. Far and away, those who screech 'freedom!' are against all taxation. TEA party was a movement against taxes. And black legislators.
Nice job stereotyping people.

Isn't stereotyping supposed to be racist? Genderist? Bigoted?

Am I to infer that those who are against freedom support maximum taxation? The belief that our superiors in DC know best? That those screeching "freedom" just need to STFU and send in their paychecks?

Yep. Party purity and party over country: The only planks in the GOP platform any more.

He's right though. I've noticed that every time taxation is being discussed, RWers start crying about "freedom" and how "taxes = slavery."
Disagreed since it's as big of a stereotype as saying all African-Americans are gang-bangers and welfare queens.

Yes, the far Right loudmouths say that, but claiming they all think "taxes = slavery" is wrong since most know taxes pay for police, roads and the US military.

Rather than throw bigoted stereotypes around, consider some facts: https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2019/12/17/7-domestic-policy-taxes-environment-health-care/
Democrats are broadly critical of the fairness of the tax system, while Republicans hold more mixed views. About half of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (48%) say the tax system is either moderately or very fair, while about as many (51%) say it is not too fair or not at all fair. By contrast, 71% of Democrats and Democratic leaners describe the federal tax system as not too fair or not at all fair; just 29% of Democrats say the system is at least moderately fair.

When asked to consider their own tax burden, 51% of adults say they pay more than their fair share in taxes, considering what they get from the federal government. Fewer adults (40%) say they pay about the right amount; just 8% say they pay less than their fair share in taxes.

I was pretty young, and I remember the rumor around the school that we were going to see a video of some sort. It was actually pretty boring, but it did touch on changes that we were all about to experience. Of course, we got all giggly about the term 'breast', etc.

No one is going to prison...If the books are boring, no big loss...;) Teachers are not "scared"...;)

No one is going to prison.

The reason you make a law that states people are going to prison is to make people afraid of going to prison. This could have been a law that said there would be administrative punishment (possible firing), but no they decided on a law that would require one to two years in prison.

Definitely not Ayn Rand. They all like to pretend to quote her, but they don't have the vocabulary to be able to get through 'Shrugged'.

They're all faking it.

Mein Kampf? Not so much. It's their bible.

Don't forget guns. They're supposed to be armed

No one is going to prison....and no one is afraid....(Unless they've got porn on the shelves...;))

He's in one of his moods. I've been tracking them, and avoiding them. I've yet to figure out the pattern, though. There isn't one Republican in Washington that believes in taxation. And screeching about freedom is always the precursor to the anti tax diatribe.

Of course, they take most of the nation's tax dollars, and pay the least.

Not a bad gig if you can get it.
