Florida book bans - the first step before burning

In fairness, Black veterans can apply. The program is setup to discourage them from applying. It all reminds me of what Frank Rizzo did to the Philadelphia Police Department. In 1966, Philadelphia had for the time unusually many Black police officers. 27.5% of hired police officers were Black, which is less impressive now, but was one of the highest in the country by far. Rizzo did not ban Blacks from apply, but by 1970, that had reduced to 7.7%. There are ways to stop from hiring Blacks, and to discourage Blacks from even applying.

It does seem that DeSantis is trying to introduce an armed right wing element into the schools. It is not just trying to fill empty positions. It is the beginning of a violent purge.

There is a small amount of training that is needed beyond a bachelors degree to get a teaching certificate, but it is not much. It is so small that veterans benefits will easily pay for it. Clinton introduced a program that will pay veterans a stipend to live off of while they get the teaching certificate, so they it is extremely easy for them to do it.

And honestly, most educated soldiers are in essence teachers already. Their job is to organize, and teach a large group of enlisted soldiers. It is not that different.

Even if the veteran does not have a bachelors degree, the veterans benefits will pay for them to get a bachelors degree. There really is no need for DeSantis' program, if the point is to educate veterans to be teachers.

Which is why I say the point is to get armed right wing paramilitary units into the schools. This is ugly.

While I doubt DeSantis is as nefarious as to put Nazis in schools, I readily agree he is politicizing the system to foster a straight, Euro-American ideal.

I'm not advocating banning books. But why would you put a book that violates school policy in the class room? I wouldn't want books on prostitution in the class room. Every city has a library that is the proper place for such books.

There is no evidence that teachers are putting "dangerous" or "icky" books in classrooms. There is a huge difference between a book like the one you referenced, a memoir written for older students and/or adults, and one written for children that has a character with two moms or mixed race parents or who is non-white. THOSE are the books that Reichwing parents are screeching about, not third-graders being given the book you referenced.

The book in question on this decision is the book I mentioned. Also it is in comic book form now who do you think that is aimed at?

Were any of you ever damaged by a book? This is about nothing. Do people read a murder mystery and go kill people? If one of you read a book with gay characters, would you be looking for someone to blow? When kids encounter books above their levels , they call him "icky". Then go on with life. We have always had school libraries divided by age appropriate. I doubt it is necessary, but we do that.

You missed "age appropriate" vs. book banning.

Do you think a person can be turned gay, EE?

Somehow Gym Jordan isn't being held to this standard.
Agreed, but since he was a staunch Trump supporter (the #1 TDSer in DC), it's okay.

Also note that, like Pedo Don, Roy Moore and Matt Gaetz, raping underage females is also A-Okay in the RNC!

Their motto? "Just say 'No' to gays!"

It's a shame that she couldn't find a way to be comfortable in the profession.

Yes, the Holocaust really got in the way of many Jews being "comfortable" in their profession. I guess that was the whole point of it. One of their first steps was to send uneducated veterans in to replace the teachers.

My dad taught for 42 years... in a time of many difficult challenges.

LMAO!!! I am sure he thought it was a time of many difficult challenges.

each individual is different but those with a passion find a way

There is only so much any individual can take, which is what people like DeSantis count on.

No resignations or arrests yet...

Florida does not get that big of a teachers shortage without thousands of resignations.

From what I hear, it is unusually common for teachers in Florida to quit midyear. If you were really a teacher, you know how disruptive that is. Things are shockingly bad in Florida schools.

The library we went to as kids had "adult themed" books behind the librarians' desk. You had to request them, and if you were underage (I think 18 but it might have been 16) you had to have a note from a parent saying it was okay to check out that book. The books were not banned, nor did taxpayers scream that they were available and refuse to vote to fund the library like the fascists do now.

Michigan GOP official: Shut down ‘by force’ public library with LGBTQ books

The train depot-themed library has received national attention since residents twice this year voted to defund their public library in a fight over graphic novels that some opponents liken to pornography or “grooming” children to be sexually assaulted.

The "Republican Party" meaning the members of the Republican Party; the voters. Unlike the Democratic Party which picked their candidates for their voters. :)

The leaders of the Democratic Party picked Clinton in 2008, but the voters decided they like Obama more. In 2000, Republicans changed the selection rules to cut McCain out of the contest.

Both parties have a back and forth between the leadership, and the base. And then if either goes too far, they have pushback from the general election.

Aren't we discussing the book evaluations arrests and running away?? If someone is quitting mid-year then they shouldn't have been there at the beginning of the year, so no real loss. And I am really a teacher... retired now... 30 years in the classroom.. I believe I mentioned that.... licensed and certified... specifically, Education of the Handicapped... Developmentally Disabled...K-12... I believe I've referred to that before as well...

I wish I would have kept the 100's of comics I bought as a kid.

I never got into comic books. Even as a kid. And I don't much care for graphic novels today. Which is ironic because I spent a few years as a graphic artist years ago and I still really love the graphic arts. But for some reason graphic novels just miss me completely. No interest in them.

...so Hillary bought the DNC. LOL

I'm not sure about the 2000 election, but they must have changed afterward if that was true. I voted for McCain in the primaries, but Bush in the election.

My understanding is that, after the Clintons left, the DNC made some changes but I'm not sure how much. I do know that when their best candidate for 2024 is a 82 year old man, that they must be desperate.
