FLAG BURNING...

our kids are dying because our government decided to extend the war on terror - gwb started it and bho is continuing it

we made iraqi oil safe for the world to exploit and now we are making scare minerals in afghanistan available to the world

neither of which i support

The kids that are dying all volunteered for military service. I see a great deal of honor and dignity in that choice, but it is their choice nonetheless.

Don't make it sound as though GWB & BHO are shipping out conscripts to die.

Do you have some kind of a problem with teaching children to have respect for the symbol of our nation and what it stands for? And if so, just exactly what in the fuck is that problem?

I would have thought that a true, loyal and honest American would have no need to declare the same as part of a pledge.
Perhaps insisting on you citizenry playing this rather childish game is because with out it they might start killing their fellow countrymen or fighting with the enemy.... unless that happens already!!!
All rather silly. I have never owned a Union Flag, as a boy scout I was taught to hoist it, fold and salute it which even then I thought a tad unnecessary.
As I have said many times, it is odd, is it not, that the two countries with a national obsession with patriotism are the USA and the PRC.
Pledge is a furniture polish and a flag is something you walk on.

Who supported/supports a federal law to ban burning the American Flag?
Well that depends. If the Feds pass a law banning the burning of a flag where to do so presents a threat to public safety due to fire, then yea....I'd support that. If the ban is to prevent the free expression of political dissent, well that's just plain unconstitutional.

You hit the nail right on the head Low. In our history we had a certain region of our nation that was treasonous and disloyal. It cost the lives of many true patriots to end the treason of these traitors to our nation. The pledge of allegiance serves as a reminder, particularly to the descendants of these traitors, of the cost of treason and why we need to remain "United".

if so, why did congress wait until 1942 to make the pledge official - could it have anything to do with our fighting wwii

And Great Britain is now known as the Late Great Britain; as in has been and used to be.

I'm against any form of 1st Amendment violation. The government shall make no law restricting your free expression, even if it is to burn the flag (so long as it is your own flag I couldn't care less). There is absolutely zero chance of any such amendment ever being ratified.
