In his case, the crime was a felony punishable up to five years in federal prison because the weapon was carried in furtherance of a commission of a crime, namely the invasion of the locked and guarded Capitol and he was convicted of that offense. The lesser punishment is one year. Any unauthorized carrying of a weapon in the building or grounds is a crime.
If it were just a peaceful protest outside the Capital, he should present that evidence in court.
As evil as all the other cops who killed unarmed civilians.

I think many conservative Christians believe their views are consistent with Christianity--homosexuality, abortion, school prayer, etc. They need to pick a side that best represents the "moral" side and believe Republicans come closer to that. They ignore the fact that Trump, Alex Jones, etc. are proven liars. They see lying less important than the other issues (or deny the lies).
And, there is the belief that our side is right and better than the other side. Social psychology experiments prove even when people are put in imaginary groups they make decisions to help their group and hurt the other. One example is the choice between giving everybody in both groups $100 or giving your group $75 and the other $25. They choose the $75-25 option. You are willing to take less money for yourself/group as long as it the other gets less.
Thus proving they are not as Christian as their avowed beliefs. It goes with the concept "Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil". By condoning lies, they are supporting lies.
Understood about human tribalism. The Stanford Prison Experiment exemplified such behavior with the addition of a distorted power structure of Guards and Prisoners.
