I've done a bit of research on Merkel, though, and she seems pretty legit as far as conservatism is concerned. I think she'll do a lot of good for Germany. Whether you want to admit it or not, the European social welfare state is on the decline because Europeans are rejecting it. The UK is next. Hell, Gordon Brown's approval rating makes George W. Bush look like a celebrity.

The CDU has been returned to government with practically no gains. The FDP won 3 more percentage points. This was not a landslide by any means.

The Socialists in Germany lost about 1/2 of their seats.

The SDP lost about 1/3 of their seats. The center-left Greens and the neo-communist Left picked up most of the losses, with the rest going to the FDP. The CDU gained nothing.

It's clearly erroneous to state that the Socialists lost ground, so that means that the left is dying, when the Socialists lost ground to environmentalists, communists, and liberals.
