A preliminary hearing began Tuesday for a father accused of abandoning his critically injured 4-year-old son at the site of a car wreck.

Witnesses could see the boy hanging out of the window of the wreckage.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, Arroyo took off running immediately after the crash, leaving Valentino behind.

[h=1]Cops: Mom, angry over citation, hit daughter on head with pot, punched face[/h]
ORLANDO, Fla. —
An Orlando mom was arrested after authorities said she beat her 13-year-old daughter so badly the child had to be hospitalized.
Officials say the mom even pulled a gun on her daughter. Allyson Roofe was arrested late Sunday night and is charged with several counts of aggravated child abuse.

The 35-year-old woman was allegedly angry after being cited for leaving the family dog chained in 120-degree heat without food or water, investigators said.

Officials said Roofe took her aggression out on her daughter, hitting the girl over the head with a metal pot, punching her in the face and dragging her by her hair.

Roofe cried in court Tuesday as she faced a judge, and her children, for the first time since her arrest. The victim, her 11-year-old sister and 5-year-old brother were visibly shaken, seeing their mother shackled and facing some serious jail time.

The Department of Children and Families asked in court that her three kids be taken away. The abuse didn't stop there, officials said. Roofe allegedly pulled a loaded .38 caliber revolver on the girl. "In this day and age that certainly rises to a high level of attention," said Carrie Hoeppner with DCF.

The victim, in fear for her life, got her grandmother on the phone, officials said. Arrest papers reveal the victim overheard her mother saying her children "will be dead before the police get here."

Child left home alone for days

CLEVELAND, OH -

A mother is facing felony charges after a toddler was found home alone, and police believe she'd been left alone for days.

Cleveland child abuse investigators have now filed a felony charge of child endangering against the mother, Nikia Banks.

The child, a 16-month old girl, had been left in disgusting conditions at an apartment near E. 30 and Central. A grandmother found the little girl and she told police the child even had maggots crawling on her. Investigators say it can take up to three days for maggots to form.

A police report shows the home had no food, a broken crib, dirty diapers, and a strong odor. The child was taken to the hospital to be fed, cleaned up and checked out. She is now with relatives. We've learned the mom told police she'd only been gone about "seven minutes."

Cuyahoga County social workers say they had just opened a case last month on Nikia Banks for neglect. The agency says a worker had seen the child, met with the mom, and met with relatives. Records show Banks was also wanted at the time by Mentor Police in a theft case.

Sharon Flanagan told police her 2-year-old son loved to swim, so she took him from their West Virginia home to Pittsburgh hoping to visit Sandcastle water park.
When young Steven said he wanted to swim in the bathtub of their hotel room at the Best Western in Green Tree, she said she dressed him in swim trunks and filled the tub with water -- almost to the top.
But when the 32-pound boy somehow ended up facedown, Ms. Flanagan told detectives, she was unable to pull him from the water, even though hotel surveillance footage captured her carrying him in her arms with ease earlier in the night.
A hotel guest and a security guard took Steven from the tub, and paramedics rushed him to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where he died July 6. Prosecutors say Ms. Flanagan, 33, of Inwood, intended to drown her son.
"She can't explain other than that she's unable to pull him from the tub," said Allegheny County homicide Detective Steven Hitchings, who interviewed Ms. Flanagan and testified at her preliminary hearing Friday. "She just knew there was some type of force pulling him toward the bottom."
District Judge Anthony Ceoffe ordered her to stand trial on charges of homicide, child endangerment and aggravated assault, saying "this is a profoundly sad situation that absolutely defies logic to me."

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —DeKalb police have arrested 29-year-old Bernadette Hester, who they said left her seven kids alone in a motel room over the weekend while she went to Miami.

Police said she left the kids ranging from 3 months old to 10 at the Extended Stay Motel on Crescent Centre Parkway.

"It's very upsetting; I think the oldest is 10," a hotel resident told Channel 2's Ryan Young.

DeKalb police got calls from motel management saying they needed help because they found the room full of kids with no food.

"After we got in the room and talked to the kids, the oldest one, being 10, advised us how we could get in touch with the mother," said DeKalb police Capt. Michael Reynolds.

"The mother was down in Miami, Fla. at the time we talked with her and the kids advised us they had been there since Saturday unsupervised."

Hester was arrested when she got back from Miami and she didn't want to talk with detectives. Police placed the kids in Department of Family and Children Services' custody.

Reynolds said the kids hadn't eaten and police had to give them food. "A real mother wouldn't do that. She wouldn't leave her kids like that. No, she wouldn't. Kids been in the room the whole weekend while she was out of town," a motel residents said.

As of now, Hester remains in jail facing seven charges of cruelty to children.http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/mom-accused-leaving-7-kids-motel-go-miami/nZyfW/

"Kristen and Douglas Barbour set out to adopt children five years ago, about the same time they were starting their biological family. They spent more than two years in a frustrating and unsuccessful effort at a domestic adoption. In early 2011, they took steps toward international adoption from Ethiopia...

The Christian (whiteasrice) couple spent more than a year working through the extensive process -- essay questions, hours of interviews with their caseworker, child abuse clearances, medical testing and a home study...

They chronicled their progress in more than 200 entries in a blog they called "Our Adoption Journey," which began in February 2011. It ends sometime in August 2012, two months before they were charged with child endangerment and assault against the Ethiopian children they came to adopt in March...

What happened to this God-fearing couple to move them from happy and loving blog posts to felony charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children?

They are scheduled for a preliminary hearing Tuesday, accused of starving their 6-year-old son and leaving him with lesions from being kept in urine-soaked clothing for long periods of time. The 18-month-old girl will likely be blinded in one eye and paralyzed after suffering abusive head trauma. Their attorney, Christopher Capozzi, declined to comment."

I am physically ill reading these child abuse cases colored by racists of every ilk. In high school, I passed out in child development class on abuse. That adults would burn, beat, torture and kill children was overwhelming. It still is. How dare you add it to your racial arguments.

(CBS) A California mother has been charged with murder in the death last year of her infant son, who police say died after drinking her drug-laced breast milk, the Sacramteno Bee reports.

32-year-old Sarah Ann Stephens, of Citrus Heights, was charged recently with murder and two counts of child endangerment following the September 2012 death of her eight-month-old son Ryder Salmen, reports the paper. Police reportedly said the baby suffered a fatal overdose of Xanax, methadone and the painkiller Opana through his mother's breast milk.
