Fatal shooting at Denver screening of The Dark Knight Rises

Glen Beck has gotten considerably richer from fear!

There are few motivators in the US more powerful than fear. We are a nation of frightened people.

9/11 is one of the best motivators ever invented. Now we have Islamophobia and fear of all kinds of skin hues.

Black, brown, yellow .. and all the hues in between .. Yup, we're scared of 'em.

Not a christian .. scared of you.

A nation of guns and incredible gun violence.

The Founders must be rolling over in their graves.

Why is the United States' gun murder rate 20x higher than the next 22 industrialized and populous nations COMBINED???

The fact that the nutballs don't want to address this is telling. Of course, they're part of the problem. There's no doubt that we in this country have far too many STY's hiding in their fortress-homes, stockpiling weapons, and pissing their pants over every knock on their door. What breeds this uniquely American paranoia?

Common sense gun control like the assault weapons ban, which had it not been allowed to expire due to pressure from the crazies and cowardice from the non-crazies, would have prevented Holmes from buying the worse of the weapons. But gun control is not the only answer. Canada proves this, IMO.

Public health infrastructure, outreach, education, and the destigmatization of mental illness is badly needed in this country.

And still, even when we do that, we will not eliminate gun violence in this country. You can't eliminate it. First of all, there is something wrong with America that no one can really explain. Paranoia and fear thrive here. Even with mental health treatments we will remain the most fearful people in the world. Furthermore, there are many things you can't eliminate. We haven't eliminated drunk driving deaths, but we've greatly reduced them. That saves a lot of lives. Just because we haven't completely ended drunk driving does this mean we should make it legal? Of course not. Only gun nuts argue this about gun laws. And only nuts agree with them.

Now come on Low....I know you have from the beginning known what it was I was getting at here...Are we in the United States gun owners, and therefore violent by nature? I don't think you can make that argument solely on the ownership of guns. Nor do I think that guns make a person violent.

I asked you after your overtly insulting screed that HK was a "more civilized" society because they weren't allowed to own a gun, if there was gun violence in HK considering the arguably most stringent gun laws in the world...So far you have danced, twisted, and hurled more insults my way, all the while avoiding that question with words like "significant" and "relatively".... The answer is yes there is... Now admittedly it is nearly non existent with HK's law fining people found in possesion HKD $100,000 and 14 years in prision for merely owning a gun, but the answer is yes it does happen....here is an example from 2006....

HK's price for this low gun crime culture is one of the highest 'police states' in the Asian world as noted here...

http://www.crime.hku.hk/rb-crimetrends.htm

So you Low prefer to live in a quasi police state...Good for you...Here in America we are independent individuals. We have a right guaranteed and upheld by our highest court to own, posses a firearm. If you don't like it, don't understand it, can't stand it? Don't come, or don't live here...But if you think you are better than I because of your geographical location, and police state living, just know that even with your highly restrictive laws you still have gun violence, and many of the same crimes (non gun) that the rest of the world has, you just can't defend yourself.

So feel sorry for me sir, nah, don't shed a tear....I feel sorry for you.

Gun violence has happened no more than two or three times in the 20+ years I have been here. The heist in Mong Kok and the police shooting in TST. There was also a murder about 18 years ago when Triad boss 'Tiger' Chan was mown down. Our police are adequate to keep the lid on any disturbance and, at present serve the community first (although how long before the become an arm of Beijing it is difficult to say).
To comment you need to understand the Chinese psyche. For literally thousands of years they have been condition to do as they are told. That is one reason that students who come to the US are brilliant at maths, physics, music, etc but as much use as a chocolate teapot as far as creativity is concerned.
We have almost no graffitti. We have minute amounts of street crime despite notices everywhere to watch your pockets. The local philosophy is if I am going to commit a crime I might as well do a gold shop as anything. The risk is about the same and I can go to Canada and live comfortably.
Now that, in my opinion is not a police state, nor is it a dangerous place in which to live. It is incredibly civilised. It is a society in which my 14 year old grandaughter can travel alone or with a few friends at any time and know she will be safe. That means that WE know she is safe and her parents know she is safe.
Your freedoms make your city streets death traps. You cant walk in what you call the 'downtown' areas of many of your cities let alone a 14 year old girl!
You have spent a lot of time trying to prove that your country with its highest gun ownership of any country in the world, your country that sees danger behind every lamp post and under every bed, your country that has just lived through the horror of a cinema massacre, you country where YOU, a person with whom I am communicating (with some difficulty it must be said) actually OWNS a device that you could use to kill me or your neighbour or anyone you dont particularly like. YOU. I find it nearly impossible to understand how you can talk about freedom in the same breath.
You live in the most dangerous modern country in the world. You live in a country that is despised by half the world...and YOU ARE PROUD OF IT. Friggin amazing!

and yet i've not committed any mass murders lately, why is that? maybe it's actually you that's paranoid.

UK and Australia have higher violent crime rates than the US and I get the impression, everything you know about the US comes from what youve read about the US.

Well, the thing about reading about the US is that all those words are written by Americans. So is what I read the truth or do Americans, as a breed, continually lie. Are the news broadcasts made by the same people who made you tubes to deny the moon landing. If you and I watch the same news broadcasts...sorry I dont do Fox...then we must both be exposed to lies and half truths.
So lets take back everything I have ever said about America and replace it with, 'All Americans are liars'. Does that suit you better?

I thought those sort of venues had metal detectors?

I think we do. Certainly there are sensors one must walk past. Never been a problem to me.. but then, I have never wanted to kill anyone. I guess these half brains, who incidentally are obsessed by the idea that someone is out to kill them, would find such a thing an erosion of their freedoms. Strange people! They will strip search you at one of their airports, but object to a simple metal detector at a cinema entrance. Do they not have detectors at store exits? Very odd.

But then, Hong Kong is one of the gateways in the sex slave industry.

Explain why the idea of a national gun register is so alien a concept? That guy could have killed hundreds if his 100 round magazine hadn't jammed!!

But how would the fact that his gun was registered (assuming he would still go through legal channels to get it if there was a national registry) have stopped what he did?

Not a thing, but if there had been some type of notification about the large amount of ammo he bought in a short time frame, it may have alerted someone to pay attention and ask questions, especially with all the other gear he had purchased.

And Rana, while others on my side will disagree with me I would not necessarily be against such alerts...but the I wasn't against every aspect of the Patriot Act either.
