Fake reporting

Funny how people still believe everything they see on the Internet. There's 7.9 Billion people on the planet and all it takes is one liar to upset your day, Ms. Moon.

Lost Legion is showing his true colors. He says we shouldn't take sides when here is a gross violation of international law, because it's none of our business.

So he ostentatiously doesn't take sides, just as the America Firsters didn't take sides in the 1930s. The real reason was that at least some America Firsters BACKED HITLER, and the rest took their cue from them.

How did that work out? Hitler declared war on the US three days after Pearl Harbor. Nice going, isolationists. Have another try.

Meanwhile;

A 40- mile-long armored column ? Can that be true ?

Yes, but it isn't an "armored column." It's all the supply and support vehicles for a corps sized (3 divisions) combat unit. If you look closely at it, it's all military soft-skinned trucks. These are carrying the food, ammunition, gasoline, etc., the combat units need to continue operations. And, yes, these could easily stretch 40 miles along a road. That was true in WW 2 just as it is today.

Is that right, General?

Just for you, Tom (and the other Doctor Pangloss types)

Beware Wishful Thinking

The sad truth is that — myself included, of course — we really do not know as much about what is happening in Ukraine as we’d like to.

Some of the things we thought we knew — that 13 soldiers were killed heroically on Snake Island; that a mysterious flying ace was downing Russian planes; that random women are carrying rifles on public transport — turned out not to be true.

Some of the things we have simply assumed — we were told that Russia’s invasion seems to have made slower progress than the Kremlin anticipated and that the Russian military is on the verge of giving up — are wishful thinking.

And some of the things that we seem to have forgotten — that the world is full of extremely complex systems that usually cannot be altered overnight — will soon become as apparent as ever.

Americans (and expat Brits) should be careful not to get carried away, or to become so obsessed with hating the bad guys and loving the good guys that they become unaware of the details on the ground.

Despite what the media would like to be true, we do not actually need to be fed infantile or cynical analogies in order to discern that Russia is the bad actor here.

We need to distinguish between Ukrainian war propaganda — which has a real value to those spreading it — and the truth.

A bigger issue for the Russians will be keeping their combat unit's equipment running. At the troop level, maintenance assets are scarce and the vehicle crews not particularly trained to do more than the most basic servicing of the vehicles. Most vehicles are kept in their depots at their peacetime bases and rarely used. For vehicles like tanks the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of some system is measured in hours. Russian tanks are notorious for breaking down. This means when they do they have to be recovered to rear area depots set up to do the repairs and then reissue them to the combat units at the front. It's not a recipe for keeping units in combat for any prolonged period of time.

Is that so, General?

:dunno:

"Ukraine says" doesn't inspire much confidence, Tom.

Does it?

Dr. Pangloss suffered from syphilis, ended up in prison and was nearly hanged and dissected, that's taking things a tad too far regarding optimism.
