F*ck You La Pierre! Principal Fires Guards, Expands Arts and Sees Test Scores Soar

I live next to, and have worked in, the Silicon Valley. Innovation is everywhere. Look at the technology revolution started here in the U.S. and how it has transformed the world. So I'm not sure how you claim we don't have innovation.

No national pride? Again, not sure how you think that. In the last 30 years we won the cold war and freed millions who lived under dreadful Communist rule. There's tremendous pride in that.

A decaying society is going to depend on who you ask. You ask a left-wing person and a right-wing person that question and while you may get the same answer their reasons could be polar opposite.

I guess I don't share your view that America is basically dying and falling apart.

I believe this is a fair assessment, although I question some of the rest.

no national pride, no common purpose, just a decaying infrastructure and a decaying society. Community has become an evil word

Fact is, after the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, gridlock in congress, and the resurgence of hate and bigotry, it's not a stretch to say there's little national pride or no common purpose. If you ask many a republican, they'll be glad to tell you society is decaying. Or at least their idea of society. The infrastructure is decaying, and at a rapid pace. Again, it's not wrong to point out massive cuts in infrastructure spending over the past thirty years as why. Finally, it's obvious "community" has become a dirty word, along with "public sector employee" consisting of teachers and first responders.

Do you really think when the President was referred to as a "community organizer" by the right wing, it was done in a positive light?

I'm just pointing out the complete and utter disolution of effective discipline in our schools. Obviously that method I described was abolished long ago.

I have some hope for our future, because we still have a class of students who attend private schools. It's not great that we're creating such a class distinction in this country, but it's better than nothing.

Does discipline have to be meted out by a security guard? There are all kinds of ways to discipline. What works for young kids doesn't for older ones. What works for normal kids doesn't work for special needs kids.

The Silicon Valley is an enclave of innovation, but it does not represent any trend in America. California has been the epicenter of innovation and forward thinking for over a century, but much of the rest of the country has not seen innovation, it has witnessed deterioration. I spent years on the road covering a large part on New York State. The most devastated communities I saw were rural areas and small towns that were once the domain of family owned farms. But corporations have put the small farmers out of business. Take a ride through the Rust Belt, and you will see a very different America than the Silicon Valley.

America has been and continues to be an imperialistic bully. We have murdered more innocent men, women and children than the 'evil empires' we are taught to hate. When we covet another countries natural resources, there are NO rules based on ethics, honesty or humanitarianism. WHY do you think President Kennedy was assassinated? Isn't ironic he was murdered right after signing on Oct 6 1963 an executive (NSAM 263) National Security Action Memorandum) report that provided for the removal of 1,000 troops in December 1963 and the vast majority of troops were promised to be out of Vietnam by 1965?

hows that state budget going?

Thank you, this statement is huge! I have worked with children since I was 15, came from a large, close knit family, lived in a neighborhood that had over 50 children on one block, Catholic, I wish more people would realize oe size is not fit all. It is my dream or our educational system to tune in on this and the way children learn, and focus on these. The evaluations they do on children in kindergarten could be used to help children pick their path of learning based on their strengths instead of everyone of using on weaknesses. I think more vocational teaching should be offered. The complaint issued on here by many poster is that there is a lack of skilled workers. Teaching to the test s stifling our youths many talents. There are eight areas of intelligence and we narrow our focus on a few.

Children are my passion.

The sandy hook school didn't have guards either!

Seriously, you hyped this like removing the security made the difference.

A child is quoted: “Now that the teachers actually help me and push me on the right track, I can actually see a future for myself,”

Why did security make a difference? It doesn't even make sense. Why would teachers not help students because the school has security guards? How does one affect the other?

I was wondering the same thing....what did guards have to do with not having musical instruments available or not having dance and art studios opened ?

This guard crap is nothing but another 'strawman' that has nothing to do with anything....unless it was a money issue
and firing the guards left more money available to the principal for other activities....

I work with the Developmentally disabled...mentally retarded.... for our vocabularily challenged.

When I started in the mid-80's...there wasn't a day that went by where we weren't restraining someone...we physically restrained them, mechanically restrained them, and chemically restrained them as a means of "behavior modification" the idea was to reward them...with edibles, hugs, or some other preferred positive attention when they're behaving properly and negative reinforcement when they behaved inappropriately.

It didn't work....it was primarily based on fear and intimidation. "Do what we want, or we'll tie your ass to a bed for two hours. At that time we had a ratio of 1:12. Four staff, four groups, 48 hyperactive and maladaptive developmentally disabled adults in the prime of their physical lives (early 30's)...I should also mention that these folk that I first started working with were also quite profoundly disabled.... we are talking about IQ's in the single digits to low teens....people who were brought to the institution shortly after birth...because that's what doctors told parents back then....put the child away, forget about him/her and try for another.

Only when we lowered our staffing ratios and switched to a positive only reinforcement model did things begin to change. We were able to give more attention...we had to learn that outbursts and those maladaptive behaviors weren't necessarily them being assholes....pain...all kinds of pain....physical, mental...whatever... when you are talking about non verbal people with virtually no ability to communicate...the only way they had to express themselves was by acting out.

Add into the mix that when they were brought into the institution In the 50's, the ratio was even worse.... 2 staff to 60 DD infants....these folk had virtually ZERO nurturing, ZERO attention and ZERO stimuli. There just wasn't enough time in the day for two staff to do it. It was at that time...a literal human warehouse. They learned to stimulate themselves in any way they could.

So some of those behaviors were created that way....others were created by survival....bigger, more aggressive people preyed on the weak...stealing food, physical attacks and when they reached puberty, sexual predation.

So by the time I got onto the scene...those behaviors were well ingrained.

I can't begin to tell you all the improvements I have seen in my years there. It would take too long and I've already gone on too long...but personal attention, combined with positive reinforcement has made a huge difference....in short...love conquers authority...which ties in nicely with the thread.

Bless you, it is a challenging and rewarding opportunity, not everyone can do it.

My first fulltime job was teaching skills to the developmentally disabled. I found with one lady when she became agitated that I would sing to her, they were tying her to a chair to restrain her from hurting herself, and others, but I had noticed during our music time that she loved music and so I sang. It worked so much better. My supervisors told her family and they implemented it as well.

Yes...I take my guitar in and play/sing for them....at least I used to before I went 3rd shift.

As proud as I am of where I live I've travelled enough to know the Silicon Valley and the Bay Area is not the only place in the U.S. where innovation is occurring. There are plenty of tech hubs (Austin, TX, North Carolina, Boston etc.) for example where similar activity is occurring. I'm well aware of many cities/towns that centered around a large manufacturing plant (for instance) that closed and decimated the city. I have Ohio roots and it has many of those type places. But if we are comparing today to the past I think the technology revolution is just as big in its own right as was the industrial revolution here.

Do you believe America to more imperialistic today than we were 40 or 100 years ago?

So, how do they settle physical altercations - give the kids boxing gloves and send them to the mats (actual PE conflict resolution from back in the 50s and 60s).
Would be nice, lets both sides air grievances in a meaningful manner and then they can both knowledge that the other is a legitimate person. Worked for me at least twice in high school.

I don't deny there is some tech innovations here, but it is not as robust as it was in the past. Outsourcing and 'starve the beast' tax policies have created a plutocracy with wealth disparity that is WORSE than the Gilded Age. It has decimated the middle class and it has gutted this country. We now live in the Ayn Rand era of conservatism. Social Darwinism where the only 'Trinity' these right wingers worship is "ME, MYSELF, and I".

No I don't believe America to more imperialistic today than we were 40 or 100 years ago. When President Kennedy was elected, he asked why America was so hated in our own hemisphere. Why countries turned their backs on America and welcomed alliances with communists like the Russians. That's why he started the Alliance for Progress. To this day you will find portraits of President Kennedy in many South American homes.

You don't think our technology development is as robust as in the past? When I graduated from college in 1995 two people in my fraternity house had computers (I think 60 people lived in the house at that time). Think about that. It's less than 20 years later and seemingly half the five years olds in our country have an iPad. When I was in school there was no internet. You did your research old school style by going to the library and looking at old periodicals on microfiche. Ask anyone pre Gen X what that is and they'll look at you with a blank stare on their face. Pagers were the big thing back then. Today kids as young as eight years old are carrying cell phones. I could go on and on. I don't see what developments mid century top the technological development of the last two decades.

Outsourcing has been around as long as this country has existed. As far as the Alliance for Progress I can't claim to be all that familiar with it. I look at the U.S.'s relationship with South American countries in my lifetime and it doesn't seem a whole lot different than the relationships I've read about prior to my birth.

Most of what you are describing is what this nation has become...consumers

Someone missed the tech boom. Even though it was British scientists, the single greatest innovation of my lifetime occurred in 1991 when the HTTP was developed.
