N Korea running out of food

On Wednesday Samaritan's Purse, a US-based charity that surveyed food needs in North Korea in February, warned that food stocks in some parts of the country would run out by June.

Former President Carter travelled to North Korea with three former national leaders from The Elders group and held talks with Kim Jong-il's deputy, Kim Jong-nam.

Speaking in Seoul after his return, he said North Korea needed food aid.

"One of the most important human rights is to have food to eat, and for South Korea and the US and others to deliberately withhold food aid to the North Korean people is really a human rights violation," he said.

though people do have the right to eat, where is it written that food is supposed to be handed out by the government? especially to other nations?

They have a "right" to the US Treasury in order to feed some other nation? Carter talks too much before engaging his brain, he really should use a bit of that vaunted IQ to filter some of his thoughts.

Jesus and Buddha are so proud.

tell us something, why isn't carter out there bashing that countries government for not providing enough protection to their people so they can farm and raise their own food? instead of letting it get taken by mercenaries?

I see Carter is worried he will lose the title as the worst president of the United States so he had to step up his game to beat out Obama.

Why doesn't NK figure out how to grow its own damn food? I thought communism was such a winner!! The world can hardly "withhold" anything from NK, seeing as how NK is supposed to be its own sovereign dominion. We have dabbled in giving food to the regime in the past, but it only gets hoarded by the military while the peasants are left to starve.

Compassionate conservativism in action?

NK should renounce their evil ways of communism, world domination, and nuclear ambitions. If they can do that, then we should send them some food. But until that happens, fuck'em, not our problem.

Thats the typical logic used by pinhead liberals in everything.....

The premise of this entire thread is that a basic right is the right to food. It sounds good on the surface.

But to blame the US because of where they didn't send food, ignores all the places the did send it.

Also, in order to meet the "basic human right" of food, farmers must grow the food, people must harvest and process the food, and it must be shipped to N. Korea. What about the basic rights of those people? Are they forced to work for free?

Don't worry, all you devout Christians, the evil, secular UN stepped up.

"The United Nations World Food Program is to start an emergency food programme to help 3.5 million people in North Korea, the Rome-based organisation said on Friday.

It said it would provide staple cereals and ingredients to enable local production of nutritious food such as corn-soy milk, rice-milk blend and nutrient-rich biscuits."

Seems it's worth the risk that some bad Commies might get fed if they can keep some women and kids alive.

Jesus wants you to know how proud He is of your compassionate conservatism.

Its funny that you expect us to help feed the citizens of a nation that considers us the enemy and refuses to feed its own people.

I'm glad the UN stepped up and did what they should have been doing all along. So, while you are so busy bashing the US, have you maligned any other nation that didn't send food?

You totally miss the most fundamental point here. "Food" does not mean food as you and I know it, this is a code word for "Money." You see, because NK is so far away, and what we eat is not the same things they eat and such, when we give humanitarian "food aid" it is often in the form of money, which is used (theoretically) to purchase food regionally. We (The Federal Gvt) don't ship crates of actual FOOD to NK. Money is transitioned, if not directly to the government of NK through the UN, to a third party associate of the government, so for all intents and purposes, we are sending them 'humanitarian food' MONEY.

Just curious, how much do you give to charity? I set aside a minimum of 15% of my income to be given to my church and to charities. If you are going to bash or make fun of people, what exactly is it that you do?
