Erin Moran, of Happy Days, dies from opiate overdose

I feel sorry for her and her family also; but you conveniently try to throw the US in a bad light and then act like similar conditions don't exist in the UK.
How about the problems being addressed as something bigger, then just being "regional"?

gee now that its white Rs families being affected you care?

The problem is vast in the US that's why, playing the blood is thicker than water card isn't going to change anything.

It is funny that some of the people who seem sad about this death are also those who are all about legalizing marijuana. As if the two aren't the different sides of the same coin.

Oh, I know the arguments, "marijuan is different". But, they really aren't.

I have very mixed feelings about drugs and the so called "war on drugs". My strong libertarian streak says live and let live. However, I have seen firsthand how devastating it can be to a person and their family

"Americans with less education are also faring much worse when compared with adults in other countries, Case and Deaton concluded. Death rates in Europe for people with limited education are falling — and in most countries, they’re falling faster than death rates for those with more education.

For those reasons, Case and Deaton discount the notion that government disability benefit programs are responsible for some of these problems by enabling more Americans to stop working. Social welfare programs in Europe are typically more generous yet haven’t caused a rise in death rates.

“Europe has a much better safety net than we do, and they’re not seeing the same sort of problems as we are,” he said.

sure..but addiction doesn't mean you can't control your dosages -that's why they call it OD -overdosing.
People get stupid and want to get higher, instead of just riding it out. I got no patience for them.

They are they reasons there are war on pain pills = pain management
Jeez anatta, as a former junkie I'd think you understand that the drug of choice for addicts hijacks the brain. The same drug affects different people differently. It's not stupidity.

I'm really lucky in that I hate opioids.to the point I'd rather deal with the pain.

You were one of the luckier ones that was able to use responsibly.

Using drugs is dumb but so isn't making them illegal. As long as the addicts don't impact my life I don't really care. As it is now about half of all crime is related somehow to drugs and that costs me in higher taxes.

That's your choice. for me and many pain -especially debilitating pain- needs management.

I don't know it it effects people all that different. the classic response from opioids is euphoria.
The degree of euphoria, and how a person reacts to it are of course different.

I thought you might find this interesting, being as you practice tai-chi, and are Taoist.
Happiness from a pill bottle..lol

Back to the mental effects, though. Contentment is a word I often use to describe them. All you have to do is to go with the flow of the opioid, and to be mindful and soak in whatever it is you are doing. You clearly wish the time would never end.

Another important thing to note is the quietness and lack of laughter and smiling. Although it may look like the opioid user is not happy, it is the opposite. The feelings one has under the influence of opioids is beyond eliciting things like smiles and laughter. It is a serious serious drug, but at the same time, incredibly desirable!
THAT is probably the hardest part to convey. How can something so 'deep' and 'serious' be so desirable? Well, it is. Sitting meditatively, in silence, listening to quiet music can turn into a treasured lifetime experience. I guess it is like sex- not too much laughing occurs in the best sexual experiences. They are serious business, but very desirable.
