Turkey has dealt Russia's Vladimir Putin a major blow after it emerged Ankara officials will meet with Sweden and Finland to discuss their plans to join NATO.

The move could clear the way for the nordic countries to join the defence alliance and help fight the threat from Russia. Finland's Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said the first meeting between officials would aim to establish contacts and set goals for cooperation that the three countries agreed to by signing a memorandum of understanding at NATO's Madrid summit at the end of June.

Erdogan's not going to join NATO. Are you high? He's an authoritarian dictator, NATO's not going to want anything to do with the fuck.

It must all seem unfair to you. Biden keeps getting victories, and trump kept getting losses. It is almost like Biden is just more competent than trump, or something.

Do you think NATO will let Turkey/Erdogan join? I guess, Hungary is, and Orban's not much better.

You mean the EU. Turkey has been in NATO since the 1950's.

I really wish the EU would let Turkey join, but they will not. Turkey is too un-European. Oddly enough, Hungary is historically un-European, but they are in. They have been holding out the promise of membership for decades now, and it never is going to happen.

I think the EU is excellent at developing countries, and would make Turkey a much better country.

I hope you're right about it becoming a "better country". Unfortunately, they've embraced authoritarianism, and it's going to be hard - assholes don't like to give up power.

Here's why I missed Turkey being in NATO - in the listing I looked up they spelled the country's name, "Türkiye".

Erdogan new pet project, changing the name of Turkey in English to something no one will ever know it by. Turkish people become confused if you even try to call them something other than Turkey. It literally is all about not sharing a name with the bird anymore, even though the bird is named after the country.

I think the EU would improve Turkey if Turkey was ever accepted into it... But I doubt Turkey will be accepted into it.

Turkey is a member of NATO since 1952, has its second largest army and is the host of the Allied Land Command headquarters. The Incirlik and Konya Airbases have both been involved in several NATO military operations since their establishment. The current Ambassador to NATO is Basat Öztürk

The reopening of diplomatic ties with Israel is the latest move in Turkey’s regional rapprochement. With it, Ankara aims to bolster national security and its wavering economy.

The August 17 announcement that Israel and Turkey will normalize diplomatic relations and exchange ambassadors comes not long after Turkey improved ties with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Turkish government has determined that de-escalation with Israel and other regional powers better serves its interests as it confronts economic problems at home and focuses on core national security concerns, such as Kurdish nationalism and relations with Cyprus and Greece.

Turkey is doing what Russia hoped to do, what India is currently doing....playing the West (America) against the Empire (China).

At some point they are going to have to pick a side, and I doubt that they pick the dying West.

Maybe Erdogan dislikes being so close to a nuclear disaster. Prevailing winds would carry radiation to Turkey. The distance is about the same as Myrtle Beach, SC to Miami, FL

Turkey is a member of NATO and has been since 1952. All NATO members have to agree for any new members to join. Turkey was originally opposed to Sweden and Finland joining but announced they would support their membership last June.

....presumably because Putin's madness is fucking with the profits of all involved. War is bad for the vast majority of global businesses. Even China is hurting because of COVID and Putin's bullshit.
