Minorities are not a prize to be bandied about like a trophy. I can’t personally speak for why minorities and women overwhelmingly support Democrats and liberals. But, I give them credit for being smart enough to know where their best interests lie, and which institutions or political parties work against their interests. They know what they're doing, and why they vote the way they do.
The Democratic Party’s hierarchy, sadly, takes minorities and women for granted much of the time. I don’t disagree that the Party leadership is 80 percent white males. Which is indeed ironic, given that minorities and women are the backbone of the party; the voting bloc that keeps them in power.
But, you can’t spin your way out of the facts. Your party is, overwhelmingly a white party. And, to a large degree, a white party of Christians from the South and the bible belt. I realize there is a large contingent of embarrassed republicans who like to claim that the Democratic Party is equally to blame and equally responsible for everything from the Iraq War, the economic meltdown, and on issues of race and quality. But, that's just coming from a place of deep-seated embarrassement and projection.
I, for one, would be uncomfortable being in a nearly-all-white party. America comes in shades of brown, white, and black. Male and female in equal proportions. Gay and straight. It’s a melting pot, and I would definetly think there was something fundamentally wrong with a political party that only reflected the white, Christian heritage of America. You obviously, feel differently about diversity and equality, Spurt.
