Survey: Let EPA protect family health

United Press International

Public support is weak for former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich's idea to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency, a survey indicates. The national opinion survey by Opinion Research Corp. International for the Natural Resources Defense Council indicates Gingrich's Jan. 25 proposal that the EPA be "replaced by an agency that would place equal consideration for corporate interests as it does for protecting American families against air and water pollution" is opposed by 67 percent of Americans -- including 61 percent of Republicans.

The survey of 1,007 U.S. adults conducted Jan. 27-30 indicates 77 percent -- including 61 percent of Republicans -- oppose efforts in Congress to block Clean Air Act updates for carbon, smog and other air pollution.

"The poll findings reflect strong bipartisan support both for the EPA in general, and also for it playing a vigorous role in relation to fighting air pollution," Graham Hueber, senior project manager at ORC International says in a statement. "There is no evidence in this survey to suggest that Americans have any appetite for dismantling an agency that they see as protecting the health of themselves and their families."

More than 24 million Americans with asthma, including more than 7 million children, are at increased risk of adverse health consequences if the members of the House and Senate seeking to block the EPA from updating the Clean Air Act are successful, NRDC says.

The survey has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

So 60% of americans are ignorant to the control grab by the EPA. Not hard to believe.

what were those numbers on the global warming a couple of years ago? LOL

Uhhh I think it should be remembered that the EPA was instituted and implemented under a Republican president and not only that but much of the major environmental legislation was approved by Republican Presidents.

1970 (Nixon) National Environmental Policy Act (creates EPA)
1970 (Nixon) Clean Air Act revised to include National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) and New Source Performance Standards (NSPS).
1972 (Nixon) Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Major legislation regulating pesticides.
1973 (Nixon) Endangered Species Act
1973 (Nixon) Safe Drinking Water Act(SDWA). This act sets public drinking water standards and created National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Standards (NPDES) permitting for waste water treatment and discharge.
1975 (Ford) Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA). The major set of regulations governing how hazardous materials are labeled, packaged and transported.
1976 (Ford) Resource Conservation and Recover Act (RCRA pronounced "Wreck Ra"). The major set of regulations governing the storage, transportation, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste. (HMTA and RCRA are my areas of expertise as a Hazmat Manager)
1976 (Ford) Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA pronounces "Tos Ka"). Major set of regulations governing how new chemical products are tested for human safety. It also regulates the management of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) wastes.
1982 (Reagan) Nuclear Waste Policy Act.
1986 (Reagan) Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986.
1986 (Reagan) Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA pronounced "Ep Kra"). Major legislation requiring facilities that store threshold quantities of hazardous chemicals to have emergency planning and to report these to local community emergency agencies (i.e. fire departments).
1986 (Reagan) Super Fund Amendment and Reauthorization Act (SARA pronounced like the woman's name "Sahra"). Makes major amendments to the Comprehensive Response Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA aka Superfund). Probably the most significant amendment is the implementation of SARA title III Workers Right To Know act which requires employers who's employees are required to use or are exposed to hazardous materials to label these materials, train employees on proper handling of these materials and spill of the same as well as providing documentation of the hazards and safe handling of these materials via Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (Bush I). Set new auto emission standards low sulfur gas and requires Best Available Control Technology (BACT) for toxins and requires reductions in CFC's.
1990 Oil Pollution Act (Bush 1). Major regulation regarding oil spills and requires threshold facilities to implement Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans (SPCC Plans).
1992 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (Bush I) (ISTEA pronounced "Ice Tea"). Requires specific planing for transporting hazardous materials by highway, rail or ship. Amended in 2005 to SAFE TEA by Bush II.
1992 (Bush I) Residential Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act.

So as you can see, and as any environmental professional can tell you, most of the major environmental legislation enacted in our nation occurred between 1974 and 1986 under Nixon, Ford and Reagan. Probably the only major modern environmental legislation in modern times signed into law by a Democratic president were Clean Air Act (CAA, 1963 by Johnson), CERCLA (in 1980 by Carter) and NAFTA (1993 by Clinton).

So why did I write this big laundry list? Well considering that almost all the major environmental legislation listed above were created by Democrat controlled congress with strong Republican support and signed into law by Republican Presidents demonstrates just how strongly the bipartisan support is for our modern environmental laws, regulations and the EPA.

If anyone is ignorant here pal it's you. Probably the best and most strict EPA director who drove enforcement the hardest was Carol Browner who worked for the first President Bush. I met the lady myself and much of what the EPA is today is because of her efforts and if you think she's some sort of over reaching liberal big government ideologue then you're a damned fool! That woman was a visionary about how modern environmental management and enforcement and this nation owe her a great big thank your for her legacy.
