Former Proud Boys chairman Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and three other members of the extremist group were found guilty Thursday of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

A jury deliberated for seven days in Washington before finding Tarrio, 29, and the others guilty on 31 of 46 counts. The jury handed down not guilty verdicts on four counts and returned to deliberate on a remaining 11 counts. The result was another decisive victory for the Justice Department in the latest of three seditious conspiracy trials held after what it called a historic act of domestic terrorism.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and three other members of the far-right extremist group were convicted Thursday of a plot to attack the U.S. Capitol in a desperate bid to keep Donald Trump in power after the Republican lost the 2020 presidential election.

A jury in Washington, D.C., found Tarrio guilty of seditious conspiracy after hearing from dozens of witnesses over more than three months in one of the most serious cases brought in the stunning attack that unfolded on Jan. 6, 2021, as the world watched on live TV.

They're going to get some free board and room for a while, and this should be a warning to the other right wing extremist.

There is no question that views of Jan. 6 have evolved over time, particularly on the right. Despite the initial bipartisan condemnation of what transpired that day, Republicans have gradually embraced the idea that the situation was overblown and even that participants have been persecuted.

They’re more likely to view it as a legitimate protest than an insurrection or even a riot. And a new poll this week even showed more Republicans want a 2024 candidate who supports those who entered the Capitol on Jan. 6 than one who criticizes them. Efforts to retcon that day’s events by Trump and the likes of Tucker Carlson have clearly borne fruit.

Several of the defendants’ lawyers attempted to use Trump’s rhetoric as a blanket excuse for the Proud Boys’ mobilization.

“You see Trump, President Trump, told them the election was stolen,” Tarrio’s attorney, Sabino Jauregui, said at trial. “It was Trump that told them to go [to the Capitol]. And it was Trump that unleashed them on January 6. He’s the one that told them to march over there and ‘fight like hell.’”
