English ONLY!

My Canadian family is tri-lingual, speaking French, English, and Russian with ease. Plus conversational Spanish.

It is downright infuriating! I always feel like the stupid American around them.

I am barely capable of pigeon-toed Spanish, and conversational Russian, and some days I have serious doubts about my English skills!

They have courses for that.

Do any of you find it more convenient to have a common language? Should a primarily English speaking country speak primarily English, esp when English is used overwhelmingly t/o the worlds?
If you say no, then please explain to me why we only select 1 for English and 2 for Spanish, and not 3 for Russian and 4 for French and 5 for Italian? Equal opportunity, right?
Would it not be beneficial for immigrants to speak English and assimilate and have the chance for a better job, instead of being sidelined to menial service jobs?
I think Miller makes a great point. Acosta and people who think like him are the ones who don't give immigrants much credit. They also seemingly want a great number of immigrants remain second class citizens.

Only in America do people snark about speaking more languages than just English. That's how backward we are.
In Germany one can't get a work permit without first passing the Deutsche Sprache Prüfung (German language proficiency examination). Same in Netherlands. That's how backward they are.

I hear ya. When you go to other countries you can always find English speakers among the natives. They're not making a political issue out of it, it's common sense.

I admire people who are bi-lingual or even more-lingual. It's not easy for adults to become fluent in other languages.

Yes, that's wonderful. But if you want to live in another country, speak the language. I wouldn't go to Japan and expect them to convert to English to accomodate me.

Also in Germany there are more people speaking English than there are Americans in the US speaking German.

It's really not that hard when exposed to English since practically birth. They play the same songs on radio as they do here and English is a requirement in all the schools (I forget how early they start).
Virtually 100% of Icelanders are completely fluent in English. Most TV stations are in English.
They're required to take Danish in school and hate it since it's only used in Denmark. The key is exposure at an early age.
I used to speak pretty good Spanish because I used it most every day. No more, so now it's pretty much lost.
One doesn't "learn" a language, rather acquires it and keeps it because they use it.
I "learned" German 20 yrs. ago when I lived in Bavaria, but probably understand more dialects and speak it easier now than back then because my in-laws speak very little English and mumble in their Sachsen dialect. (although the younger ones understand most everything if spoken slow enough.)

The problem is that American teabaggers, trumptards, and conservatives celebrate ignorance. Which is why in the past two decades, dimwits like George Dumbya Bush, Sarah Palin, and Donald J. Drumpf have been their icons, their heroes. The faces of movement conservatism.

Most Germans, especially under a certain age speak good English. Chancellor Merkel is fluent in Russian.

Meanwhile, American conservatives celebrate ignorance, polls indicate they think a college education is a bad thing, and the flaccid Orange Buffoon they elected can barely speak coherent English.

Nothing worse than reading lables on a bag, then start having to study spanish to interpret half of it. PRINT IT IN ENGLISH BITCH!

If you can't read it OH WELL. I don't want to have to sit there and read half of the directions in another language.

The irony is thick!

The RW morons on this forum don't know the difference between an adjective and a noun. Get the fuck out of our country, you illiterate shitweasels!

Are you man enough to get me out, BOY? You can't keep me from fucking your wife.
