When compared to the environmental damage and human misery caused by oil drilling and transportation mishaps, the problems associated with cobalt mining are negligible.
A void argument fallacy. What 'human misery' is caused by oil? Oil is not drilled by slaves.
Two noteworthy examples being:
1.) The Exxon Valdez oil spill which occurred in the Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989. Exxon Valdez, an oil supertanker owned by Exxon Shipping Company bound for Long Beach, California struck Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef, 6 mi (9.7 km) west of Tatitlek, Alaska at 12:04 a.m. and spilled 10.8 million US gallons (260,000 bbl) (or 37,000 tonnes) of crude oil over the next few days.
The Exxon Valdez spill is the second largest in U.S. waters, after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in terms of volume of oil released.
Normal bacteria in the water consumed that oil. The wreck was caused by a drunk driver (the captain and 1st mate). Those waters are just as pristine as ever now.
2.) The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the "BP oil spill") began on 20 April 2010 off of the coast of the United States in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect, considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry and estimated to be 8 to 31 percent larger in volume than the previous largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill, also in the Gulf of Mexico. The United States federal government estimated the total discharge at 4.9 MMbbl (210,000,000 US gal; 780,000 m3) After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on 19 September 2010. Reports in early 2012 indicated that the well site was still leaking. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is regarded as one of the largest environmental disasters in world history.
Most of that spill never reached the shore, since naturally occurring bacteria consumed almost all of it before it reached any shore. There was no 'environmental disaster'.
Add to that, the untold millions of people who were made ill, many with emphysema, COPD and lung cancer, many of them dying from their exposure to fossil fuel related smog and air pollution, and again, the comparison to the effects from cobalt mining are negligible.

Gasoline produces carbon dioxide and water as exhaust. Neither it nor crude oil are fossils. It does not produce emphysema, COPD, lung cancer, lumbargo, hives, incontinence, ulcers, Covid, or any other disease.
Smog is no longer a problem, thanks to EGR systems. NOx gases are no longer produced in any significant quantity (a necessary component of smog), and sealed fuel systems and CBR systems prevent unburned fuel from evaporating into the atmosphere (saving fuel!), another necessary part of smog. You are making shit up. You've probably never even SEEN smog!
