Elon Musk Says He Would Reverse Donald Trump’s Twitter Ban

Again, this is not "as goes Twitter, so goes the world".

Nixon put a stop to the Vietnam War because of the protests and escalating conflicts in the country....all without an internet or PC's.

The Civil Rights Movement, the Labor Movement....the most advanced tech communications for the masses at those times were short wave radio & telephones.

It's just a matter of time relevance....if everyone is on the same page, things get done at a certain pace.

I'm not saying dump the internet or improved communications per say, I'm just quoting the late, great Douglas Adams, who said, "DON'T PANIC!" ;)

You will get zero argument from me about the negative effects Twitter has had on our public discourse and society. I don't know if reforming it is actually possible but if it is I hope Musk pursues it. But its type of platform isn't going anywhere.

I get it, if one doesn't like Trump you likely think it's great that Twitter banned him. But I really like Musk's viewpoint here in speaking about the results of that action that permanently banning him only emboldens his supporters and loses trust in the platform (as opposed to deleting or making invisible certain tweets, or a temporary suspension). Always a bigger picture at play.

Elon Musk Says He Would Reverse Donald Trump’s Twitter Ban

‘I think that was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country,’ he says

Elon Musk said he would reverse Twitter Inc.’s TWTR -1.58%▼ ban on former President Donald Trump.

“I do think that it was not correct to ban Donald Trump. I think that was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country, and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice,” said Mr. Musk, who was speaking virtually at a the Financial Times Future of the Car summit.

Mr. Musk called the ban a “morally bad decision,” saying permanent bans undermine trust in Twitter.

“If there are tweets that are wrong and bad, those should be either deleted or made invisible, and a suspension—a temporary suspension—is appropriate, but not a permanent ban,” Mr. Musk said.

Mr. Musk agreed last month to buy Twitter in a $44 billion deal. He said Tuesday that the transaction wasn’t a done deal and that several steps, including a Twitter shareholder vote, still needed to be completed.

He said that banning Mr. Trump eventually would amplify the former president’s voice among those with right-wing political views. Mr. Trump has said he wasn’t planning to return to Twitter and was focused on his social-media venture called Truth Social.

Leading up to the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 last year, Mr. Trump posted tweets that Twitter executives viewed as inciting violence. Twitter permanently banned Mr. Trump’s account on Jan. 8.

Representatives for Mr. Trump didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A federal judge last week tossed a lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump against Twitter and its then-Chief Executive Jack Dorsey over alleged censorship. Twitter declined to comment.

Mr. Musk also said that Twitter suffers from a politically left-leaning bias and that the social-media company “needs to be much more evenhanded.” He partly linked those political leanings to Twitter being based in San Francisco.

Mr. Musk said it likely would take at least another two or three months before the Twitter deal closes.

The billionaire entrepreneur, who has likened Twitter to the public square and a forum for the exchange of ideas, reiterated his desire for several changes at the platform, including eliminating bots and scams. He also doubled down on plans for Twitter’s software code to be made open source so it can be widely viewed and people can recommend changes. “You really want transparency to build trust,” he said.

He has previously said he aimed to make Twitter less dependent on advertising, the platform’s principal source of revenue today.

Mr. Musk, who has described himself as a free speech absolutist, has said Twitter would comply with local laws governing content. This week he met with a top European Union official and said his plans for Twitter were aligned with the bloc’s new rules aimed at compelling social-media companies to do more to police illegal content, after his initial vision for the platform raised concerns among regulators in Europe.

The First Amendment did not seem to anticipate the rise of Social media Platforms that would perform de facto bannings of opinions and points of view from the Market Place of Ideas.

As written, the First Amendment does not guarantee access to Twitter, but it should.

When individuals wield the kind of power to ban other individuals from being heard, that is a problem. These bans did not ONY impact Trump.

"Followers" of many Conservative, notable Twitter user accounts were "disappeared" from accounts. Following the announcement of Musk's purchase, they reappeared.

At the same time, "followers" of many notable Progressive, notable Twitter user accounts simply vanished following the announcement of the Musk Purchase.

While correlation is not causation, the correlation is oddly consistent and cuts against any reasonable objection that there was not ongoing and conspiratorial collusion to silence one side of many debates.

The leftists in America today are no different than the leftists as we have come to know and despise them across history.

Prominent conservatives have seen their Twitter followers balloon since Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover was announced — prompting claims that the sudden surges proved the platform imposed secret bans on certain accounts.

Those are opinion pieces, not facts. Obviously, you don't know the difference. No wonder you swallowed The Big Lie.

When it comes to free speech, regardless of the medium or platform, one truth stands out and is undebatable:

YOU HAVE THE PROTECTED RIGHT OF FREE SPEECH, BUT THAT DOES NOT GIVE YOU IMMUNITY FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF SAID SPEECH
.

I am not confident that Musk will be allowed to control Twitter, but if he does he should do this on day one, it is a great way to offload tons of malcontents at Twitter who need to go.

No severance either, and if they vandalize Twitter then I expect charges.

Well in this case, the bigger and evil doing they are with a smirk and that haughtiness, the harder they fall. This especially when it comes to the immature and young ones who are born with a silver spoon shoved up their ass but missing out on the real facts of life and what it means to be a grown up with a good head on their shoulders.

whos to say whats "wrong or bad" ? Far to subjective.

Flash this up when you enter Twitter
"the opinions seen here are those of the poster and may or may not reflect the views of Twitter"

and leave everything alone.
What if a person kept posting that ingesting bleach cures cancer? Let it go despite the fact kids or adult idiots/mentally ill end up dead or in hospitals?

It’s one thing for you or I to post such a thing but if a national leader keeps posting such nonsense, is that a legitimate concern?

trump will be back on Twitter in Sept or Oct 2024.

I truly hope so since it will prove Pedo Don is still a scumbag liar:

Trump says he won't return to Twitter if account reinstated after Musk takeover, he tells Fox News
Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he will not return to social media platform Twitter (TWTR.N) even if his account is reinstated following the platform's purchase by billionaire Elon Musk…

…"I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on Truth," Trump told Fox News. "I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on Truth," Trump said.

trump always was intimidated by real billionaires.

In NY real estate, actual billionaires have been laughing at him for years.

For a billionaire, Trump has the most overcompensation issues I’ve ever seen in someone who in his position. He constantly lies to over-inflate his wealth, his power, his prestige, etc.

IMO, it’s all related to Stormy Daniel’s comments about his genitalia.

Musk might be looking for a better deal: ”The news sent Twitter shares down more than 20% in premarket trading.
Who knows what goes through his head from minute to minute? He bought 8% of Twitter, and immediately sent the shares soaring. If he wasn't so filthy rich, he might have dumped it and skipped all the way to the bank.

I don't know if the deal goes through at a lower number? Twitter is obligated to put investors first, which is why the original deal was locked in no matter what the nation wanted.

I think it was just another publicity stunt, as he's not the only billionaire stealing the space travel hoopla. Reminds me of the flap when he forced his little submarine into the cave years ago.

LOL. He's always been a blowhard, but we in NY knew that for decades. If you don't recall, Google the Merv Griffin incident where trump bragged about 'getting over' on the old geezer.

But yes...being referred to as 'Alf Dick' tore him up for sure. Again, Mike Bloomberg used to chuckle every time he was asked about trump.

Real billionaires have liquidity. trump has debt.

In hindsight, Griffin got the last laugh because Donnie went bankrupt! He should have let Griffin win ;)

Not a business nor a fucking lawyer, but since he was able to put the deal on hold, he clearly has maneuvering room.
