Election leads disappearing after midnight

Anyone remember Florida in 2000?

That's just prominent. In EVERY election, candidates take big leads in states early only to see them dwindle and disappear. Republicans in particular often take early leads because many rural areas are the 1st to report, only to see the race flip once the urban areas tally their votes.

But Trump made it sound like something brand new, and made people believe it was somehow sketchy and indicative of shenanigans. Like once you took a lead, it meant that you won.

Trump knew going into the election that the mail in ballots were going to lean heavily toward the Democrats, so even three months prior to the election he was out there raising suspicion regarding absentee ballots and their being counted after the pools closed, thus was born the election night conspiracy

In the nation as a whole, nearly 46% of all votes cast were by mail in voting, fifty percent in the five swing States, and in the majority, those votes weren’t even counted until the polls official closed and up to three days later

Remember Trump's election eve speech? The whole "we were about to have a beautiful celebration" thing?

I mean, was this the 1st election he really paid attention to? Celebrations are when states are called - not when you happen to have a lead in a state at some point during the evening. But that's how Trump's worldview is - he had the lead, so it means he definitely won.

why do you suppose it is that Donkey strongholds routinely take longer to call the numbers from the vote counting machines into the central office ? Mind you they all are using the same counting devices (not counting by hand) that give you the count as soon as the ballot is read.

Numbers, and in that election, the preponderance of mail in ballots, close to 46% of the entire vote cast, some of which didn’t even arrive till Election Day and could not be counted till after the polls closed. Did you think say Pennsylvania which had over three million mail in votes we’re going to get them all counted in a couple of two three hours

as noted in the OP it is customary and not at all recent.
Numbers do not explain it, its still counters on the machine. a few more machines comparable communications to central.
And the pendulums tended to start swinging back more like midnight.
But as to 2020, exit polling betrayed the secret as well.

Let's see. Lincoln County, Missouri: Population 59,000. New York City: Population 8.4 million.

My six-yo granddaughter can look at those two numbers and tell you which one will take longer to tabulate. :rolleyes:

the the ballot counter got incremented the moment each of those votes in each jurisdiction was fed into the machine all day long. onl the tally is reported to central counting.
